Anya Taylor-Joy has already been involved in a lot of big franchises so far in her glittering career: From Mad Max to Mario, and beyond. Altogether, her films have grossed over $2.8 billion at the box office. Later this year, she returns to Arrakis in Dune: Part Three, after making a brief cameo as Alia Atreides, the younger sister of Paul Atreides, in Dune: Part Two. And then, in 2027, she joins one of the biggest movie franchises of all: The Lord of the Rings.
In The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, she plays Seren, an original Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm. Her character is a loyal, but lethal agent of King Thranduil (played by Lee Pace). She's one of only a handful of completely original characters being introduced in the movie. Others include Kate Winslet's Marigol, and Leo Woodall's Ranger of the North, Halvard.
For the most part, The Hunt for Gollum is bringing the old team back together. The movie is directed by Andy Serkis (who also returns as Gollum), and produced by Peter Jackson, the director of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Legendary stars Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Elijah Wood (Frodo) are also reprising their roles.
In getting in on the act, Anya Taylor-Joy is particularly elated. “I feel like I've been an elf my whole life, so it feels very validating to go and actually be able to do it as a job,” she told Rotten Tomatoes in a recent interview. "I think just being able to be a part of this world and to inhabit this character is a dream come true."
She's under the stewardship of Andy Serkis, who didn't helm the original movies, but has been a key figure in the success of the franchise for over two decades. “I think he's a wonderful man and a wonderful innovative creator," Taylor-Joy said of working with him.
Given that she plays an original character, not much is known of her role in the movie beyond her portrayal of the elf Seren, who is an agent to King Thranduil. The movie tells a parallel story to the beginning ofThe Fellowship of the Ring, after Bilbo's birthday but before the Fellowship enters the Mines of Moria. At that point, Gandalf worries about the danger of Gollum being captured to Sauron. He sends Aragorn on a quest to track down Gollum and extract all of the knowledge he knows about the One Ring.
The Hunt for Gollum arrives in theaters on December 17, 2027.
