The first trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 is here, and it shows our heroes growing up fast!
Live-action adaptations of animated TV series can be hit and miss, as Avatar: The Last Airbender fans know all too well. The beloved Nickelodeon series was given the big-screen treatment in 2010 with a film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, intended to bring the story to life. The film was not only a box office flop but trashed by fans of the series for a number of reasons, including cramming the entire first season into one film, cutting out characters, its terrible script, bad acting and not even getting the pronunciation of character names right.
That naturally ended any chance of a franchise for Shyamalan, but thankfully Netflix revived the saga in 2023. While not perfect, their live-action Avatar was far more faithful, and had some nice turns to the storyline. It still follows the main beats of the animated series: in a world made up of four nations, each based on the elements with people who can "bend" them, the Avatar is a figure who can bend all four elements and bring harmony to the world. However, when the latest Avatar vanishes, the evil Fire Nation embarks on a war to take over the rest of the world.
A century later, that Avatar, Aang, is found frozen and revived. The first season focused on Aang learning of his powers and facing the Fire Nation, with the countdown to a comet beginning which sets up a grand battle ahead.
The show was renewed for two more seasons, likely each adapting the matching animated installments, with the third season just wrapping up filming last month. Now, the first trailer for season 2 is here, introducing a beloved key character and expanding on this amazing world!
Meet Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2
The trailer is narrated by a woman talking about how, “the world is vibrating…we are all connected.” We get shots of the main characters doing some top-tier action. Aang (Gordon Cormier) is training blindfolded, learning more about earthbending after time as an airbender; Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu) is firing off lightning and hunting for Aang and his friends, aided by her allies Mai (Thalia Tran) and Ty Lee (Momona Tamada); Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Suki (Maria Zhang) are on the run, and monstrous underwater creatures are attacking the air glider of Teo (Lucian-River Chauhan).
We also get shots of Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) training Zuko (Dallas Liu) and a cool bit of Katara (Kiawentiio) “surfing” on water. The trailer showcases how the main characters are being forced to grow up fast, as this adventure is no longer a fun lark but building to a war with the Fire Nation.
The trailer climaxes by showing the narrator, one of the most beloved characters in the show: Toph Beifong (Miya Cech), a blind earthbender who competes in a fight ring and shows off her stunning abilities to control the ground around her.
It’s only a glimpse, but a great one to get fans excited, nailing the tone of the animated series perfectly and bringing in more of the great characters fans love. Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be a must-watch for fans of either version of the tale.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 premieres on Netflix in 2026.
