For me, the most recognizable component of any form of media is music. Even the smallest jingles can instantly be connected to all sorts of memories and emotions, which is why a good soundtrack is important for movies, video games, and television shows. Music also helps transport the audience into the world that they are experiencing.

A composer is crucial in music composition, serving as the conductor who brings together large numbers of instruments and players to synchronize them into a cohesive, finished piece of work. Here are five of the greatest composers who made an impact on fantasy as a whole!

Nobuo Uematsu

The Final Fantasy series is widely popular for numerous reasons. One such reason is the soundtrack of these games, which are all beautifully composed by Nobuo Uematsu. His music does a splendid job of setting up emotional and triumphant moments for the heroes and villains.

The battle themes in particular are amazing, making use of bombastic brass instruments to make these moments all the more thrilling. His impact on video games is well known, often being referred to as the "John Williams" of the industry.

Hans Zimmer

The sheer number of films and television shows that Hans Zimmer has composed music for is more than enough of a reason to include him in this list. He has done outstanding work for many genres, including fantasy/sci-fi, in which he most notably composed the soundtrack for both Dune and Pirates of the Caribbean.

From swashbuckling epics to otherworldly odysseys, Zimmer doesn't seem to have any limits. He expertly composes the music to fit the tone of every scene, which leaves an impression that is hard to forget.

Howard Shore

Howard Shore's work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy is more than enough to explain his impact on fantasy media.

“The Shire” theme is cozy and heartwarming, perfectly describing the harmonious life the hobbits live. By comparison, the music of Mordor is chilling and imposing, which helps highlight how inhospitable the land is. Without Howard, the story wouldn't feel as epic as it should.

John Williams

Without a doubt, John Williams is responsible for some of the most recognizable soundtracks in film history. He is the creative mind behind all of the compositions of Harry Potter and Star Wars. He has done work for many other films, including Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, and E.T.

"Iconic" is the best way to describe his work. The opening theme of Harry Potter will forever be stuck in my head, along with "The Imperial March" and "Duel of the Fates." He is a respected name in the industry for a reason.
