Few sci-fi films have had such a large impact on the genre as Blade Runner. Ridley Scott's 1982 movie based on the Philip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? introduced a neo-noir future where androids, called replicants, were created to do humanity's dirty work where it was too dangerous for actual humans to go. But as the replicants gained more autonomy, some slipped free of those confines, setting off a chase where an undercover investigator named Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is called on to track them down before they can pose a danger to the people of Earth.

Believe it or not, the original Blade Runner film was set in 2019. Much has changed since then, as we saw in Denis Villeneuve's ambitious sequel starring Ryan Gosling, Blade Runner 2049. Replicants gradually gained more prominence, despite their struggle to understand the more human aspects of their limited lifespans, while humanity fell into the same self-destructive traps it always has.

Blade Runner 2099 pulls us ahead even further, to a time when replicants have taken over control of the planet, while humans eke out a living as best they can beneath their heel. It's into this dystopia that viewers will be launched when Prime Video debuts all eight episodes of its new limited series from showrunner Silka Luis, which sees Ridley Scott return as an executive producer through his Scott Free banner.

Before the dawn of the replicants, let's take a moment to go over everything we know about Blade Runner 2099, including its release info, cast, trailer, and what we know about its mind-bending story.

Blade Runner 2099 release date & time

All eight episodes of Blade Runner 2099 premiere November 25 on Prime Video. The show is a limited series, meaning it will tell the entire story in this one go and there's no plan for a second season. As such, you can watch the full tale woven by the sci-fi drama anytime after its premiere date.

As for the time Blade Runner 2099 drops on Prime Video, the streamer hasn't officially announced it. Prime Video usually releases its shows at midnight Pacific Time / 3:00 a.m. ET. However, the streamer also has a tendency to sometimes drop its buzziest releases a little early to catch the evening viewing crowd the night before their official release date. I would start keeping an eye out for Blade Runner 2099 on the platform anytime after 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET on November 24, just in case the studio wants to surprise us.

Blade Runner 2099 synopsis

Here's the official logline for Blade Runner 2099 from Prime Video:

"Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city."

In addition, we did get some teases about what's in store at New York Comic Con, where several members of the Blade Runner 2099 cast was on hand for a panel discussing the series. Matthew Needham, who House of the Dragon fans might recognize as the actor who portrays Larys Strong, hyped up the "great detective story" at the heart of this new show, which sees Olwen and Cora race against time to unravel a mystery that could upend the burgeoning replicant society of Earth. Needham plays Yahya in Blade Runner 2099, a "cruel" replicant who is often at odds with Olwen.

Blade Runner 2099 trailer

You can watch the Blade Runner 2099 trailer above, which was revealed in October 2026 at New York Comic Con. It gives our best idea yet of what's in store for the series. Olwen is trying to figure out why a number of replicants have gone missing, which puts her on a collision course with Cora, who appears to be one of the few human characters in this limited series. Cora has taken on the identity of a Blade Runner — that's a sort of plainclothes operative in this world who is responsible for "retiring" replicants, a.k.a. killing them. Does this mean she's behind the missing androids?

I doubt it. It's clear there's a bigger mystery at play here. The most cryptic moment comes when Olwen claims someone has the "cure for all replicants." That's likely a reference to the fact that replicants were created with an intentionally limited lifespan, something which Olwen will probably be very interested in "curing," considering that her own is about to run out.

Find out how it all plays out for Olwen and Cora when Blade Runner 2099 premieres November 25 on Prime Video.
