It's been almost a decade since Blade Runner 2049 was released in theaters. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, it is one of the best of the Blade Runner franchise, standing toe to toe with the original 1982 film. 2049's gorgeous cinematography and poignant story defined a generation of moviegoers and heavily struck a chord with male viewers who related to the replicant character, Officer K, a.k.a. "Joe."

While the rainy cyberpunk world dystopia isn't returning to theaters just yet, it's found new life on Amazon Prime Video as a limited series. And, finally, we have an exciting update.

Blade Runner 2099 coming to Prime Video in 2026

Back in 2022, the show was greenlit. The title was later revealed to be Blade Runner 2099, establishing that this series takes place 50 years after the events of 2049. While not much of the plot is known yet, we could theorize that some elements of the replicant uprising briefly mentioned in 2049 will appear in 2099. It's also a mystery whether Jared Leto will make an appearance as an old and shriveled Wallace, or if his corporation is still around.

Deadline now confirms that 2099 will premiere on Prime Video in 2026. The publication reports that the series has entered post-production and had been previously eyeing a 2025 or early 2026 release, so hopefully that means it will premiere in the earlier part of the year. But for now, all we’ve got is the year.

Silka Luisa serves as showrunner, known for Shining Girls and her brief work on an episode of Paramount's Halo series. Ridley Scott is an executive producer, working closely on the project. Jonathan van Tulleken, highly regarded for his direction on Shogun, directs the first two episodes.

As for the cast, Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once) stars in the leading role alongside Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes). Tom Burke and Dimitri Abold will also appear, along with Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Hugo Hamlet, Wil Coban, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Maurizio Lombardi, and Matthew Needham.

Watch these titles while you wait

While we wait for Blade Runner 2099, there's more than enough time to catch up on everything relevant to the franchise. There is, of course, Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049. Both movies are currently available to rent on platforms like Fandango at Home, YouTube, and more.

Additionally, there are three short films directly tied to 2049, 2036: Nexus Dawn, 2048: Nowhere to Run, and the animation, Black 2022, all of which are free to watch on YouTube. Then there's the one season of the anime Blade Runner: Black Lotus streaming on Crunchyroll, which takes place in 2032.

Stay tuned for more updates on Blade Runner 2099!
