The first trailer for Blood of My Blood has revealed the show’s epic twist that will have Outlander fans more excited than ever!

Outlander has arguably become Starz’s most successful and acclaimed original hit series. The adaptation of the Diana Gabaldon novels has enthralled viewers with the tale of Claire Randall, a former World War II nurse who falls through some mystical stones and arrives in 18th century Scotland. She falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser and the pair embark on an epic romance that bounces between the 20th century and the American Revolution.

A spinoff was inevitable, and Starz is providing it with Blood of My Blood. The show will showcase the love story between Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), Jamie Fraser’s parents, who meet and fall in love in the 1710s. It will also explore how, during World War I, soldier Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and nurse Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) communicate by mail and forge a connection that would lead them to become Claire’s parents.

Fans thus expected a fun show with two different storylines that would show the dual romances amid wartime and how these couples were bound together. But the first trailer for Blood of My Blood has revealed a twist that makes it more epic!

What’s the Blood of My Blood twist?

In the trailer, Julia and Henry are taking a drive through a familiar countryside when they crash and Julia lands within a familiar set of stones. She wakes up in 1714, where she meets up with Ellen. Henry then follows through the stones to find her.

So rather than dual timelines and plots, Julia and Henry are both going back in time to get involved in the Fraser-MacKenzie feud, which appears to have raged for decades. Not only that, they’ll both inadvertently push Ellen and Brian together despite how Ellen seems betrothed to Malcolm Grant (John Lumsden).

There will be battles in both time periods, with plenty of drama and politics matched to the time. Of course it’s Outlander, so expect some steamy romance scenes; in the trailer we see Ellen and Brian hooking up in a tower. We also get a shot of a young Murtaugh (Rory Alexander), whom Outlander fans know had been in love with Ellen, so that complication will come up. All this and what looks like baby Claire as well.

The time travel twist is a great one, as it instantly answers just how Claire was able to use the stones to travel in time, because her parents already had. Fans may have been excited for this prequel already, but the time travel twist only makes it better. Seeing these two romances link together and each couple’s connection growing amid the action makes Blood of My Blood a worthy entry in the Outlander franchise. The show premieres August 8 on Starz.
