Given how much he writes, Brandon Sanderson fans almost always have something to look forward to — but his latest Mistborn update is especially exciting. The fantasy author confirmed that he's now finished with Mistborn: Ghostbloods book one, bringing Era 3 a step closer to being a reality.
Sanderson celebrated the milestone during his weekly YouTube update. These videos see the author offering insight into the progress he's made on his current projects. Ghostbloods book one has been steadily approaching the 100% mark, and now, it's finally there. It's a big step forward, though fans shouldn't get too excited just yet. After all, this is just the first draft.
And Sanderson admitted that he probably won't get around to reworking it any time soon, as he's focused on adaptations as well. "I've gotten the rough draft of that done," he explained. "I will not be able to get to the revision very soon because I need to do Hollywood things. I warned you about this."
Indeed, he did. The author's 2025 State of the Sanderson blog post revealed that potential adaptations of Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive are gaining traction again. However, as he intends to be involved in any project tackling his work, they might temporarily pull Sanderson away from his writing.
"Expect that when any Hollywood deal is completed," he wrote, "I’ll likely need to pause writing on Ghostbloods for some time to devote my full attention to anticipated film and television projects (as I have every expectation of being very involved in any adaptations of my works going forward)."
Fortunately, Sanderson still has plans to start the revision and Ghostbloods book two once his Hollywood to-do list is complete. Hopefully, that won't be too far off — though Mistborn Era 3 will take a while to arrive either way.

It will be a while before Mistborn: Ghostbloods book one is published
Even without Hollywood projects stealing Sanderson's attention, Mistborn: Ghostbloods book one will take a while to be published. In the author's State of the Sanderson post from 2024, he admitted his plan "is to write the three books straight through," only publishing the first of them once the entire series is complete.
That's going to take time, and in 2025, the author confirmed that 2028 looked like a pretty set release window for the first installment. So, while Sanderson's latest update is great news, it doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things. Mistborn fans will still need patience as they await the next chapter of the author's fantasy saga.
Fortunately, it's still a shorter wait than we'll have for the second leg of The Stormlight Archive. And Sanderson will have releases for us to enjoy in the interim. His Tailored Realities collection just came out in December, and Blightfall and The Fires of December are expected in 2026. Needless to say, there's a lot to look forward to ahead of the next batch of Mistborn books. And with Sanderson making such good progress, we shouldn't have to worry too much about delays.
