We’re closing in on five months since word first broke that Apple had greenlit a film adaptation of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn franchise, and the acclaimed author is about to hit a major milestone in the creative process for the film!

One of the many things fans love about Sanderson is his candor and the way he makes it a point to keep fans updated on the progress of his many projects in development. Rather than giving fans vague updates here and there, Sanderson is always forthcoming with the status of his projects, and his latest update is certainly one to be excited about.

During his latest reader update, shared on June 23, Sanderson revealed that the Mistborn screenplay is officially 85% complete, putting it one step closer to the finish line.

“I am moving along step by step. Bing! 85%. Not as much movement this week as I had some other things to do, but I’m looking to turn that in in July. It’s looking really good,” Sanderson shared. "I've had a bunch of meetings. I actually flew out last week and was at Apple again. This is very regular now, which is a lot of fun but also a lot of time.”

Sanderson is correct that there wasn’t too much movement on the screenplay since his last update, as the screenplay was said to be 80% complete about a month ago. It seems his meetings are slowing the progress slightly, but there is no reason to fear as he’s still on track to complete the project by its original timeline.

Brandon Sanderson is on track to finish the Mistborn screenplay by his original timeline

When word broke that Apple had struck a deal with Sanderson that included a film adaptation of Mistborn, Sanderson was confirmed to be retaining creative control, which was a major sticking point for the author. This news excited fans as it immediately made it clear the adaptation will be faithful to the source material, which isn’t always the case for fantasy adaptations.

"I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full-time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right," Sanderson shared at the time

That five-month timeline meant that Sanderson was aiming to complete the screenplay for the film by July, and that is still the plan. With 85% of the screenplay complete, Sanderson is in the home stretch of finalizing the screenplay and is very much on pace to hit the initial goal he set for the project.

Barring a major unexpected setback, Sanderson should be completing the Mistborn screenplay in the weeks ahead, which will allow the film to pass a major milestone and put it one step closer to hitting theaters. Things are moving fast and in the right direction, something we're sure fantasy fans can appreciate given how slowly some projects tend to move.

Once the screenplay is complete, there will likely be a review process and some refining done before the screenplay gets the final seal of approval. From there, we’ll shift our attention to the casting process as Apple begins assembling the ensemble who will bring Mistborn to life and inhabit the book’s iconic characters!
