Brandon Sanderson has been in the news much of late, and there's no sign that's going to stop anytime soon. The wildly prolific author behind series like Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive has a lot going on right now, from adapting his work at Apple TV to promoting his upcoming book The Fires of December, along with plugging his current co-written book that came out in September, Blightfall.
Keeping track of all the goings on in Sanderson's career is a gargantuan task, but thankfully the author regularly makes the effort to keep fans up to speed. A new weekly update video just dropped on his YouTube channel, which contains some fun information about Sanderson's scheduled meeting with Apple TV to break the revision for his Mistborn screenplay. "They seem a little scared of me," Sanderson joked, revealing that he pulled a trick out of his writing teacher bag for the meeting.
Brandon Sanderson has met with Apple TV about Mistborn script revisions
Sanderson updated his percentage tracker for the Mistborn 2.0 screenplay to 15% this week, revealing that he met with the folks at Apple in Los Angeles on Monday, October 19. Since he records these videos days ahead of time, he wasn't able to give us any news on how that meeting went, but he certainly had a good enough idea of what was in store to provide some intriguing insights.
"I will know [after the meeting] how much time this revision will take," he said. "We're just going to go over things. They seem a little scared of me, because I've told them they need to have a whiteboard...and we're going to take the outline, the original outline and the screenplay, and we're going to break it down and I'm going to go all Professor Sanderson on them at this meeting."
That last is a reference to Sanderson's renowned BYU writing lectures where he makes extensive use of whiteboards for class. I imagine the meeting with Apple had only one whiteboard though, instead of a massive wall of them. No doubt Sanderson made due just fine.
It's pretty clear from the video that Sanderson finds all this amusing, and he imagines the people at Apple do as well. "They're good sports," he said. "But we might have a two or three hour meeting. Or it might be an hour long and everything goes faster than I thought! Either way, I'll know better next week."
A substantial Mistborn movie update is probably coming next week
Sanderson talked about this meeting with Apple TV in last week's update video as well, saying that the actual revisions for his second draft of the Mistborn screenplay were on hold until after he and the studio talked through their notes. Now that that meeting has officially happened, it seems safe to expect a more substantial update on the Mistborn 2.0 screenplay during the weekly update video that will likely drop on Sanderson's YouTube next week. These updates typically release on Tuesdays, so keep an eye out on October 27.
Adapting a large fantasy book like Mistborn: The Final Empire into a two hour film comes with plenty of challenges. Sanderson has been honing his screenwriting craft for a while now in anticipation of an opportunity exactly like this one. Here's hoping that the meeting went well, and we get good news around the end of the month as he fully dives into revisions on the upcoming first Cosmere film.
