Brandon Sanderson unveils cover art for The Stormlight Archive expansion fans have wanted for years

Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere is filled with vividly imaginative stories, but few compare to The Stormlight Archive, the author's self-proclaimed magnum opus which currently spans five door-stopping fantasy tomes and several tertiary works, with five more massive books planned down the line. Over the course of the series' first arc, Sanderson wove a tale of honor and betrayal, magic and warfare and mystery where no matter how grand the tapestry became, there was always more story waiting to be discovered.

Right now, Stormlight is in the middle of an extended hiatus while Sanderson works on his next Mistborn trilogy, titled Ghostbloods. But just because we'll be waiting until at least 2031 for the sixth mainline book in the series doesn't mean we won't get more chances to visit Roshar. In fact, we're going to learn a lot more about our next opportunity this October.

Speaking to fans in a weekly update from the Dragonsteel booth at the FanX convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sanderson announced that Brotherwise Games, the masterminds behind The Cosmere Roleplaying Game, are back at it again with an epic new game called War for Roshar. And this is one that fans have been waiting for.

"When I first met with Brotherwise Games...where we discussed the partnership, I told them that there were two things specifically that my fans had asked me for a lot," Sanderson explained. "One was an RPG. And then the other was a giant, epic war game set on Roshar. You know, a battle game, a long-play board game with all the fancy pieces and things like that. So, they have knocked it out of the park on the RPG, and they came in and demoed the board game at last for me, that they've spent many years working on. And so that is about ready to go."

War for Roshar was originally announced a little earlier this year, but with this latest reveal, we're finally getting our first good look at it. Sanderson showed off the cover art for the game, which you can check out below:

As for what's inside, Sanderson said War for Roshar is "about epic battle, epic scope of combat." However, it will also feature individual characters controlled by the player, who "will be leveling up as you go with little bits of additional abilities."

The Kickster for War for Roshar holds more details straight from Brotherwise Games. This is an asymmetrical strategy game in the vein of Star Wars: Rebellion or War of the Ring, where one player commands the forces of Honor and the other the forces of Odium as they duke it out across the dramatic landscape of Sanderson's fantasy world.

"The Honor player will command the Coalition, recruiting Knights Radiant to fight a desperate battle against the relentless armies of Odium's forces. You'll begin with two leaders that determine your starting deck, then gain cards over the course of the game that unlock new armies, allies, and Surgebinding powers," reads the Kickstater description.

Honestly, this really does sound like the exact sort of game that Stormlight fans have wanted for years. I love that not only is this a complex, sprawling strategy game, but it also has distinct factions where one player fights for good and the other evil. The leaders named in the Kickstarter are of course Kaladin and Dalinar for Honor, and Raboniel and Taravangian for Odium. But it sounds like there will be more when the game officially launches. No doubt we'll learn more as the Kickstarter gets underway.

"They've done a wonderful job with everything they've built for us, so I'm really excited for you guys to be able to see this," Sanderson said of Brotherwise Games' latest tabletop adventure in the Cosmere.
