Get ready, romantasy fans, because another book is getting an adaptation. The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson is coming to a small screen near you.
According to Deadline, the USA Today bestselling book is being adapted for Hulu. The series is being developed, and Masterson is on board as an executive producer. The adaptation is currently looking for a writer to script it for screen.
Masterson even took to Instagram to share the big news, sharing that she was “over the moon” to announce it to her fans:
For those who don’t know what The Poison Daughter is about, the story follows Harlow Carrenwell, a woman whose lips are literally poison, and she kills every person she kisses. However, she discovers that one night a target she kisses doesn’t die — and he just so happens to be her betrothed.
The book itself is a standalone and perfect for a miniseries. It features some fun tropes like “marriage of convenience” and “forced proximity," among others—with some vampires thrown in the mix for good measure.
There has been so much news recently about adaptations for popular romantasy books, especially those that have been released in the last few years or so. It felt as if, for ages, Hollywood was scared to adapt these books because of how loved they are or how complicated it might be to bring them to screen.
But now, we've been getting nothing but a plethora of updates on book-to-screen adaptations. For example, there have been some huge Fourth Wing TV announcements. Starz is also going to be adapting The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
However, it is important to address the rather large elephant in the room. Hulu once tried to adapt a very popular fantasy romance series (A Court of Thorns and Roses), and after years of production hell, it fell apart and is now in search of another home. So I do have a bit of a grudge with Hulu.
Even so, Masterson seems very excited for the team she has to adapt the series, and that itself makes me quite excited. And Hulu itself has had some incredible adaptations. They aren't fantasy, but they are award-winning, such as the incredibly popular The Handmaid’s Tale, Normal People, We Were The Lucky Ones, and more.
So with that in mind, I do have faith this will come together. And hopefully soon we’ll be seeing this adaptation on our screens and falling more in love with these characters than we already have. And if you haven’t had the chance to read The Poison Daughter, you can check it out on Amazon.
