Hulu is rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We don't have a release date nor a trailer nor even a title, but we do have a star: according to Gizmodo, Ryan Kiera Armstrong — who you might remember as Fern from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — will play a new Slayer chosen to stand against vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness.
The 15-year-old Armstrong will play "an introverted high-school student." Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy herself, will also star in the show as well as serve as an executive producer. There's a pretty adorable video where Gellar gives Armstrong the good news:
Joss Whedon was the driving creative force behind the original Buffy show, but he's been exiled from show business so he will definitely not be involved in this reboot. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are writing the scripts. The pilot will be directed by Chloé Zhao, who won an Oscar for directing Nomadland before shooting her shot at Marvel fame and fortune with Eternals.
We don't know who else from the original show might come back. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's little sister Dawn, tragically passed earlier this year. But we don't know if there was a plan to bring back her, or anyone else from the show, in the first place. These are early days.
I was a big fan of Buffy when I was a kid, and I have no idea how to feel about the new show. There have been reboots that have honored the original source material while standing tall on their own, and reboots that clearly never should have been made. It's too early to tell which this is.
As a side note, the fact that Ryan Kiera Armstrong is committing to this show probably means that she won't be returning for a second season of Skeleton Crew, which probably means there won't be a second season of Skeleton Crew. It already seemed like a long shot. Consider this one nail in the coffin. It's not completely closed yet, but it's closing.
