Charlie Cox confirms that Netflix's Daredevil series is canon within the MCU
By Ashley Hurst
Next year, Charlie Cox will return to our screens as Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again, a new show coming to Disney+. Cox originally played Murdock in the Daredevil show on Netflix, which was a favorite among fans until it was canceled in 2018, mainly thanks to Disney shoring up its intellectual property in advance of launching their own streaming series. There have been questions about whether the new Daredevil show will actually continue the story from the original, but Cox is here to set our minds at ease. The original show is indeed canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
That implies that all the other Netflix Marvel shows — including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist — are also part of the MCU, which could complicate things. It's a nightmare for fans obsessed with continuity. So far, we've only seen Daredevil pop up in the MCU proper, with Cox making short appearances as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk.
In any case, Cox confirmed in an interview with Empire that the events of the original series are still in play. “A lot of the history follows on,” he said. “The relationships and dynamics set up in the previous seasons still exist.”
Daredevil: Born Again wasn't always going to be a straight continuation. When the reboot was first discussed, Cox says there were conversations about "reinventing the whole thing” but ultimately the writers preferred to stick with the original series and “it ended up being more of a continuation."
So where and when is Daredevil: Born Again set? “A few years have passed," Cox explains. “In that time, Matt, Foggy, and Karen have found a pretty good rhythm,” and, “Matt’s made peace with his role both as a lawyer and a vigilante.” But of course, with his archenemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) gathering power, and possibly even running for President, "shit hits the fan” very quickly.
Empire also previewed a new look at the upcoming series, featuring Murdock himself alongside business partners Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). Check it out:
