How many planets occupy the galaxy far, far away where the dark and light sides of the Force have been striving against each other ever since Luke Skywalker first picked up a lightsaber in Star Wars? According to Lucasfilm, literally hundreds. The studio has debuted an updated version of their official map of the galaxy, and it is a jam-packed place. Take a look below and see if you can spot any familiar place names:

I'm mostly kidding; I don't think anybody is going to see much anything without blowing up the image first, which I encourage you to do. Lucasfilm has also provided a handy key to help you look up planets. Simply find the planet you want, and the key will tell you where to look on the map.
There are a truly staggering number of worlds featured on this map, well into the hundreds. The Star Wars franchise has been around for a long time and built up quite a lot of mythology. There's familiar places like Luke's homeworld of Tatooine (R-17, in the Outer Rim of the galaxy, way out in the space boonies), the capital city of Coruscant (L-9, in the Core, in the heart of the action), and Dagobah, the swamp planet where Yoda hides out after the fall of the Republic (M-19).
But the map by no means restricts itself to movies from the original trilogy. Pretty much every iteration of Star Wars is represented. You can track down Cassian Andor's home planet of Ferrix (Q-3); find Pabu (L-3) where Clone Force 99 hid out in The Bad Batch; visit the planet Bracca (P-9) from the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order; find out where the Sith planet of Exegol (F-7) was tucked away in the "Unknown Regions," and much more. Even the omissions seem intentional; for instance, you can't find the planet of Camino, where they were growing clones in Attack of the Clones, on the map, because it lies "beyond the Outer Rim," aka outside the galaxy.
I'm just a casual Star Wars fan and even I think this is pretty cool. And I'm sure the super-fans out there could spend hours acquainting themselves with the finer details of the galaxy.
The next Star Wars project to hit the screen should be The Mandalorian & Grogu, a new movie which is due out in theaters on May 22 of next year. Check back afterwards to see if the map needs updating.
