Chris Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday
By Ashley Hurst
Chris Evans portrayed Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for approximately eight years, beginning with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 right through until 2019 with the epic Avengers: Endgame, which served as the end of the road for his character. He would later reprise his classic portrayal of Fantastic Four (2005) hero Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. And now reports are suggesting that he'll be dropping in on Avengers: Doomsday, one of the next big tentpole events in the MCU.
This info comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which is about as reputable an entertainment publication as exists; this is no passing rumor. Currently, it's unclear whether Evans will be playing Steve Rogers/Captain America or Johnny Storm/Human Torch...or someone else entirely. I mean, Robert Downey Jr. has decided to get back into the action as none other than Doctor Doom after playing Iron Man for years. But even so, the most likely outcome will be Evans reprising his roles as either Steve Rogers or Johnny Storm.
Personally, I think Johnny Storm seems like the better option. Steve Rogers was given the perfect conclusion in Endgame. Moreover, if Evans were to return as Captain America, it would directly conflict with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson having stepped into the role. Mackie will make his debut as Cap in February 2025 with Captain America: Brave New World.
Evans has previously stated that he's open to returning as Cap, although he has some reservations about the idea. "I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing,” he told GQ in 2023.
The cast of Avengers: Doomsday is already looking pretty stacked. So far, the movie reportedly includes Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing).
Kraven the Hunter may be the last of Sony's Spider-Man villain movies
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to premiere on May 1, 2026. In the meanwhile, there's a new Marvel movie opening this weekend...kind of. Kraven the Hunter, the latest in Sony's string of superhero movies that revolve around Spider-Man villains (but that don't have Spider-Man in them), is now out in theaters.
Although the Venom movies have been decent-sized hits for Sony, films like Morbius and Madame Web have been straight-up bombs, and there's a very real possibility that Kraven the Hunter will follow suit. According to a Sony insider interviewed by TheWrap, Kraven may be the final one of these movies that Sony puts out. The reason? They suck.
“The biggest issue with the Sony Spider-Man spinoffs seems to be the lack of quality control," the insider said. "The movies just aren’t good. Sometimes that lack of quality meets a movie no one asked for, which was the case with Madame Web, and that is a no-win scenario."
Instead, Sony will focus on making a new Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, which has a much greater chance of success. So "enjoy" Kraven the Hunter and movies like it while you can.
