Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners finally got its second teaser, which gives us over a minute of high-octane, blood-pumping action and compelling visuals of some mysterious characters. Once dark silhouettes with their identities hidden on social media, they are now front and center in the video. Taking place in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077, the action-RPG developed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 tells a brand-new story featuring a new cast of characters in the corporate-run dystopian landscape of Night City.
Once again, Studio Trigger animated an absolutely breathtaking, brutal, and bloody spectacle with their signature punchy and electrifying art style. VP of franchise at CD Projekt Red and producer and writer of Edgerunners, Bartosz Sztybor, is also back for season 2. Before we saw any teasers, Sztybor mentioned wanting to make the story much darker. Judging by the intensity of the trailer, there's a good chance he kept his promise. Season 1 alone was highly regarded for bringing many fans to tears whenever "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" played. I wonder what banger music this season will use for their emotional beats. From the teaser alone, I'm already loving the soundtrack choice. Metal always puts a smile on my face, and it suits the escalation of chaos and violence in this universe.
With the trailer, character names and profiles were released on the official website. Fans are able to connect a few dots with what they saw in the trailer, and maybe if you're a lore sleuth, craft some good theories. I know I have a few.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 cast of characters & theories
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 follows four main characters, with one more yet to be seen. Weak (yup, that's his name), the blonde one, formerly known as King, was once chromed-up (cyborg), but is now a hollow shell seeking new purpose. The shifting eyes are a tell-tale sign he's going through cyberpsychosis in the teaser. I liked how the first season portrayed this mental illness, so I'm interested to see how season two does with a character that deals with it for longer throughout the series. David and Maine both went through cyberpsychosis only briefly.
Then there's D, in the blue jacket, a Snake Nation netrunner nomad from the outskirts of Night City, seeking revenge on whoever's responsible for wiping out his clan. His character profile doesn't seem to mention much about cyberware, but I find it intriguing that he gets the most screen time with the "red-lightning" effect. I could be reading too far into it, but I believe it's a sign we're going to see more Blackwall hacking powers in this series.
In the Cyberpunk universe, the Blackwall is what keeps deadly superintelligent rogue AI from roaming free. The Phantom Liberty DLC explored this further with one of its characters, Songbird, who contacted AI through the Blackwall to use scary netrunning abilities. It was akin to black magic, in a sense. When helping Songbird, using the Blackwall to kill enemies always looked like red electricity, arcing everywhere uncontrollably, frying wires and cyberware it touches. It could allow someone to kill others or cause tech to explode with a wave of their hand. It's said that D's path of revenge leads him to uncover corpo secrets that should've stayed hidden, so it's possible they were meddling with Blackwall experiments. D being a netrunner would also further connect him to something like the Blackwall.
It's also worth noting that Phantom Liberty's art contrasts sharply with the base game. More red bleeds into the graphics than before. The same is happening here, with much more red in the presentation than in season 1. I admit I could be wrong, and the red sparks could be purely stylistic. That's very possible. But it would be cool to see more ties to Phantom Liberty in Edgerunners' second season.

Roman, the boy with the camera, is described as a cinephile trying to keep film alive. In a world where people record with their cyberoptic implants, an analog camera stands out. He wants to capture the truth, no matter how messy it looks. I like how there'll be some segments of the show stylized with a found-footage effect, so we're seeing through Roman's lens. It could create some creative and intense sequences. And I wonder what he'll do with the footage he records. Will he go to an outlet, risk releasing it himself, or blackmail? I doubt the latter, but in Night City, having dirt on anybody is armor for you.
Talia, the masked one, is a corpo turned Maelstromer. Heavily modded with cyberware, she has the most striking design on the cast. The Maelstrom gang is known for being obsessed with gearing themselves to the teeth with chrome. As we know, that's a good way to go cyberpsycho. I also wonder how she ended up in Maelstrom. Per her description, "hardened by Maelstrom's grip" suggests she was caught, or perhaps held against her will. However, she's described as being "fiercely independent." Maybe she tries to loosen Maelstrom's hold on her. The chrome-junkie gang is known for being controlling and not kind to traitors.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set to release on Fall 2026. You'll be able to watch it on Netflix.
