A few years back, we featured Alan Moore's graphic novel V for Vendetta in our list of comics that deserve TV adaptations. And now, it's becoming a reality at HBO, with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios on board as executive producers.

With the release of Superman earlier this year, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe the main continuity right now. The rebooted continuity will continue in 2026 with Supergirl, followed by a Clayface movie.

On the TV side of things, there's been a number of excellent standalone DC adaptations in recent years. One of the biggest and most celebrated projects is HBO's adaptation (which was more of a spiritual sequel) of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel Watchmen. The limited series was an enormous success, winning 11 Emmy Awards in 2020, including Outstanding Limited Series.

Now, according to a report from Variety, HBO has lined up its next Alan Moore adaptation in the form of V for Vendetta, one of the author's most popular graphic novels. Set in a totalitarian Britain in an alternate future, the story follows V, a freedom fighter who works to take down a fascist government. It takes inspiration from the Gunpowder Plot, which is remembered annually in Britain during Bonfire Night on November 5.

If this sounds familiar, the graphic novel was adapted into a movie by the Wachowskis back in 2006, starring Hugo Weaving as the titular V and Natalie Portman as his accomplice Evey.

The upcoming series has found its writer in Pete Jackson, a writer best known for his work on Somewhere Boy (2022) and The Death of Bunny Munro (2025). According to the Variety report, Gunn and Safran of DC Studios will executive produce, as will Ben Stephenson via Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK.

If a V for Vendetta series wasn't surprising enough, Variety has also revealed that a series based on Jimmy Olsen is also in the works. Olsen is a photojournalist who works at the Daily Planet and joined the new DCU this summer in Superman. While not a superhero and very rarely a protagonist in comics, he will have his own solo show. What's more, the show's villain is Gorilla Grodd -- an archenemy of The Flash.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are attached as executive producers and co-showrunners. Naturally, Gunn and Safran are also involved.
