Tomorrow, Netflix will drop new episodes of The Sandman, based on the comic book series by Neil Gaiman. It'll drop another more new episodes later in the month, followed by one last episode after that, and then the series will be over.
The show is ending sooner than fans would like — they're going to have to cut a lot of material from the comics to tell the rest of the story in one season — but if the second season of The Sandman is as good as the first, we can at least hope for a fun ride. At one point, Netflix was filling out a whole cinematic universe based on The Sandman; another show, Dead Boy Detectives, had roots in the comics. But Dead Boy Detectives only lasted one season before Netflix made like Netflix and axed it.
Fans of both shows may be pleased to hear that Jayden Revri, who played one of the dead boy detectives, will show up in The Sandman season 2. That's according to What's On Netflix, which noticed that Revri’s agency Revolution Talent confirmed his appearance in a since-deleted Instagram post. So the evidence may be gone, but the internet is forever.
Revri played Charles Rowland, who died in 1989 and who now works with fellow ghost George Rexstrew (Edwin Payne) to solve mysteries. The dead boy detectives first appeared in a story from The Sandman comics before spinning off and having their own adventures. A character from The Sandman, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) appeared on Dead Boy Detectives, so apparently the show is now repaying the favor.
We don't know if Jayden Revri is turning up in the first batch of new Sandman episodes Netflix is dropping on July 3 or in the second batch coming on July 24, or maybe even in the final episode dropping July 31. My bet is that he has a pretty small role; again, the show has a lot of ground to cover.
I know I'll be watching. The Sandman is tricky story to get your head around; it's about a family of eternal beings who oversee different aspects of human nature, but they're also people themselves with their own histories and personalities. The show has done a good job of taking his high concept idea and turning it into enjoyable entertainment. I expect the second season to follow suit, with a cameo from one of the dead boy detectives as a bonus.
