More than a decade after Dexter first carved out its place in pop culture, the iconic serial killer has once again returned to dominate the small screen, and the numbers don’t lie. Dexter: Resurrection, the latest installment in the long-running franchise, has slashed its way to a record-breaking debut, proving that this blood-stained saga still has plenty of life left in it.
Dexter: Resurrection premiered its first two episodes on Paramount+ with Showtime on July 11, before making its cable debut on Showtime that Sunday night. According to Deadline, the crime drama managed to pull in 3.1 million global viewers across platforms over the weekend of its release. That's a 46% increase over the debut of Dexter: Original Sin.

The news outlet also reports that with its strong debut, it's now Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever on Paramount+, surpassing previous entries in the franchise and setting new records for the network. Deadline reports that the number of people who streamed the premiere is 44% higher than the number who streamed Dexter: Original Sin. It’s also 79% higher than the streaming audience for Dexter: New Blood.
But wait! That's not all. Since the premiere, overall franchise viewership on Paramount+ has reportedly risen 132%, meaning people are rewatching older Dexter shows too. I guess you can call it the Dexter effect? If Dexter: Resurrection continues on this positive trajectory and consistently delivers strong ratings, Paramount+ with Showtime will have no choice but to invest even more in the franchise. That could potentially mean more seasons and exciting spinoffs. We're keeping our fingers crossed!
Clyde Phillips created Dexter: Resurrection. It serves as a sequel to Dexter and Dexter: New Blood, and takes place a few weeks after the events of New Blood. Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter Morgan, who after surviving a near-fatal gunshot wound, tracks his missing son Harrison to New York City, where Miami’s Captain Angel Batista is close behind, determined to find them.
Joining Hall in the cast are Uma Thurman, Jack Alcott, David Zayas, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez, James Remar, Peter Dinklage, and others. As of July 23, only the first three episodes have come out so far. A new episode is released every Friday on Paramount+ with Showtime before airing on Showtime the following Sunday.
