The new season of Doctor Who, featuring Ncuti Gatwa returning in the lead role, is coming soon. The BBC and Disney just released a trailer showcasing all the interstellar adventure that awaits the Doctor and Belinda Chandra, his new companion played by Varada Sethu. Watch above!
When it comes to companions, they either want to join the Doctor on time-traveling, world-hopping flights of fancy — that's what happened with the Doctor's last companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) — or they fall into the situation and would very much like it to stop, please. We don't know what circumstances result in Belinda being on the TARDIS, but she's one of the latter kinds of companions. Although it looks like she'll come around to the Doctor's brand of whimsy as the season continues.
I'm also impressed that she responded to the Doctor's introduction by calling herself "the nurse." This show has been on since the 1960s; is that the first time anyone ever thought to do that?
Millie Gibson will be back as Ruby Sunday, by the way, but it looks like companion duties will mostly shift over to Belinda. The show is moving forward under the stewardship of Russell T Davies, who revived the show in 2005, steered it through some of its most successful seasons, went away for years, and is now back. I see an episode based around an intergalactic singing competition, The Traitors host Alan Cumming voicing a terrifying cartoon that climbs off the movie screen, and a lot more.
This upcoming season of Doctor Who will be the 41st since the show's inception, the 15th since its revival, and the second since Russell T Davies just sort of decided to reset the clock with Ncuti Gatwa's introduction. The trailer doesn't come with a release date, although we've heard it'll premiere on April 12, on Disney+ in the U.S. and on the BBC in its native Britain.
Doctor Who has been beset lately by rumors that it's in trouble, but the trailer looks pretty fun, so we'll hope for the best.
