At last, U.S. Whovians are happy as the “NuWho” era is finally getting a new streaming home!
For a franchise that’s lasted over 60 years, Doctor Who can be pretty tricky to catch up on. Fans of the classic 1963-1989 show can view it on BritBox, YouTube, or the free service Tubi (which helpfully divides it up by the different Doctors).
Meanwhile, Disney+ has streamed the show exclusively since 2025, starting with the run of the 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. The show's current status remains uncertain due to behind-the-scenes issues, but it is scheduled to return with the traditional Christmas special in 2026.
Seasons of Doctor Who to stream on AMC+ in the U.S.

However, there’s been a long absence of the “NuWho” era, which began in 2005 and ran until the Disney deal was announced in 2022. These are 13 seasons, including holiday specials, totaling 176 episodes. For a long time, fans could watch these on HBO Max, but in July of 2025, those seasons were removed.
Now, per TV Insider, Doctor Who’s new era will be coming to AMC+ on June 11. It’s a good fit for the streamer with Courtney Thomasa, Executive Vice President of AMC Global Media’s linear and streaming products, praising the addition:
“Doctor Who strengthens AMC+’s position as a destination for premium genre storytelling – curated franchises defined by iconic worlds, passionate fan bases, and enduring cultural impact. We’re thrilled to welcome the Whoniverse into our home of fandoms, giving longtime fans a reason to return while inviting new audiences to discover one of television’s most beloved franchises.”
Added Lawrence Szabo, EVP of Content Sales, North America & LatAm, BBC Studios (using one of the Tenth Doctor’s favorite expressions):
“Doctor Who is one of the most beloved franchises in television, with a fanbase that spans generations. AMC+ has built a differentiated home for premium genre franchises and deeply engaged fandoms, making it the ideal exclusive U.S. streaming partner for these 13 seasons of Doctor Who. We’re excited to bring these adventures back to longtime U.S. fans and welcome new audiences into the Whoniverse. Allons-y!”
A short Doctor Who history

For the uninitiated, Doctor Who follows the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels across time and space in the TARDIS, a craft that looks like a police box on the outside but is massive on the inside. The original show ran on the BBC in story “blocks” of four to six episodes, which were packed together when it was syndicated to the U.S.
The show’s longevity is thanks to the fact that, every now and then, the Doctor “regenerates” into a new body, allowing a new actor to take over. There were seven Doctors before the show ended in 1989, with a 1996 Fox TV movie attempting a revival.
In 2005, the show was finally revived in full with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler. Eccelston was followed by David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whitaker.
The show’s return to a new streamer is welcome news, as there was a pretty big gap between the original run on various platforms and the more recent run on Disney+. It revived the property for a new generation of fans, launching Tennant and Smith to true stardom with great supporting characters (like John Barrowman as Jack Harkness, who’d lead his own spinoff, Torchwood). The arcs were well done, and it’s a period that deserves to be remembered.
Finally, fans can stream the complete Who for hours of adventures across time and space. It may be complex to need so many streamers for it but when have things ever been easy for the Doctor?
Doctor Who (2005-2022) will be streaming on AMC+ beginning on June 11.
