The new season of Doctor Who is upon us. New episodes will start airing this Saturday, April 12 on Disney+ in most areas around the world, and on the BBC in Great Britain. There are eight new episodes coming our way, with one coming out each week. Here's the full schedule:
- Episode 1: "The Robot Revolution" — April 12
- Episode 2: "Lux" — April 19
- Episode 3: "The Well" — April 26
- Episode 4: "Lucky Day" — May 3
- Episode 5: "The Story & the Engine" — May10
- Episode 6: "The Interstellar Song Contest" — May 17
- Episode 7: "Wish World" — May 24
- Episode 8: "The Reality War" — May 31
The new season of Doctor Who will feature the return of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. His companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) will return from the last season, but it looks like she'll have more of a supporting role. The main companion this time around will be Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu).
As usual, the episodes will mostly stand alone, although there will be an overarching plot in there somewhere. One episode that's grabbed attention from the trailers is "The Interstellar Song Contest," which seems to be a parody of the Eurovision song contest, but in space. Why not? "The Reality War" certainly sounds climactic. With all the advances in AI we're seeing, surely an episode about "The Robot Revolution" will hit home.
You'll notice I keep calling this "the new season." That's because it's hard to determine what number to apply to this season. Doctor Who has been around since the 1960s, and if you want to reckon from then, this new season is the 41st. If you go by when series was revived in 2005, this is the 15th season. Showrunner Russell T Davies has made things more confusing by calling Ncuti Gatwa's first season as the Doctor "season 1," which would technically make this new season "season 2."
So this is either season 2, season 15 or season 41. You know what? It's just the new season, and it starts this Saturday. Let's keep it simple.
