Fan may have uncovered release date for Stranger Things 5, and it's much later than hoped

One fan went sleuthing around the code for Netflix's website and may have uncovered the release date for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

Stranger Things is one of the most popular and influential original series Netflix has yet produced. Beginning back in 2016, the sci-fi drama has followed the adventures of a bunch of a young townies as they fight interdimensional monsters invading the sleepy burg of Hawkins, IN. We've seen a lot of the cast members grow up before our eyes over the past four seasons, and it's going to be an emotional experience watching them throw themselves into one last fight when the fifth and final season of Stranger Things airs on Netflix sometime this year.

But when exactly? Netflix hasn't revealed an official release date, but one fan may have cracked it. An X account called @UpsideDownScoop went digging around the code for the Stranger Things page on Netflix's website. They show their work here. According to what they've gleaned, new episodes of Stranger Things will drop on...November 27, 2025.

It should go without saying that this news should be taken with a gain of salt...probably a big one. Looking at the code, it does look like there's a date of November 27, 2025 listed under the "Premiere Date" heading in the website code. But I don't think we need to take that as gospel. It could be a placeholder, it could be subject to change, or it could just be something on the backend of a website that doesn't apply to the major decisions of the studio. Until Netflix tells us a release date, I think things are still up in the air, at least officially.

@UpsideDownScoop also says that, at least according to this code, all eight episodes of Stranger Things 5 are scheduled to drop at once, which I find hard to believe. Stranger Things season 4 had nine episodes, seven of which Netflix dropped in May and the final two of which it dropped in July. Again, Stranger Things is one of the studio's biggest shows, so I imagine they'll want to stretch things out a bit.

That said, it's not impossible that Netflix could premiere new episodes on November 27, which also happens to be Thanksgiving day this year. True, that would mean that fans will have been waiting over three years to see new episodes, which is a very long time. But if there's one show in Netflix's roster that people would be willing to wait that long for, it would be Stranger Things. I could see them releasing one batch of episodes on Thanksgiving and another around Christmas, giving people something to watch over the holiday breaks.

We've also heard that Netflix will release the third and final season of Squid Game, another of its most popular shows, in June. I was originally hoping that the final season of Stranger Things might drop in July or thereabouts, but maybe Netflix thinks that would be firing two of its biggest weapons too close together. Hopefully the studio releases some official information soon.
