Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest movie gets official release date with AKOTSK director attached

After months of speculation, we finally know when the next chapter of the ever-expanding Westeros screen universe will debut. Deadline reports that the upcoming film Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest has set a release date of June 1, 2029.

This news comes as the mega-merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery approaches the finish line, in spite of ongoing antitrust litigation slowing the process. While it isn't completely clear yet how things will play out for the corporations, the news about Aegon's Conquest is a welcome indicator of the theatrical fare that would likely remain on the calendar even if the acquisition goes through.

Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest is being developed off a screenplay written by Beau Willimon, who penned the amazing prison break episode of Star Wars: Andor as well as created Netflix's hit original show House of Cards. Deadline also has a director for the film: Owen Harris.

If that name sounds oddly familiar, it's because Harris was one of the directors for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He helmed the first, second, and fifth episodes of the season. Yes, that's right, the director behind Dunk's spectacular trial of seven is in charge of Aegon's Conquest! It's hard to think of a better fit.

For now, that's all the news we've got about the movie, but it's more than enough to get excited about. It paints a very clear picture of what's in store for the Seven Kingdoms in the coming years.

Aegon's Conquest release date cements the future of Westeros on screen

While movie release dates remain subject to change, especially when they're still several years out, I would bet that Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest is going to stick roughly to this Summer 2029 window. In fact, it's what I've been expecting for a while now, because it will slot perfectly in with future seasons of HBO's Game of Thrones spinoff shows, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon.

The fourth and final season of House of the Dragon is currently slated to premiere sometime in 2028. Meanwhile, if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can stick to the yearly cadence it's aiming for, it will see its third season premiere during that same year. That means 2028 will be a massive year for Westeros. The first Game of Thrones spinoff will end, while the second will catch up to all of the written material George R.R. Martin has so far published for it, meaning a new course will need to be charted for Dunk and Egg's future.

With all that in mind, the calendar will be wide open for Aegon's Conquest to swoop in during 2029 and keep fans invested in the Seven Kingdoms.

Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest will of course cover the titular Conquest, when Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys used their three massive dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, to unite the Seven Kingdoms under the Iron Throne. The Conquest is one of the most legendary events in George R.R. Martin's lore, and is covered in depth in the fake history book Fire & Blood, which also contains the source material for House of the Dragon. It's the perfect sort of story for the big screen, replete with set pieces so epic they'd be hard to recreate on television. We'll see the forging of the Iron Throne, the burning of Harrenhal, the Field of Fire and more! I can hardly wait.
