Casting for the highly-anticipated Practical Magic sequel is well underway, with six new additions recently announced, including Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and Foundation's Lee Pace. And that's not all! It was already previously confirmed that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman would be returning as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, but now Deadline reveals that Stockhard Channing and Dianne Wiest will be back as Aunt Franny and Aunt Jet. who took in the sisters after the death of their parents.
Apart from Williams, Pace, Channing, and Wiest, the latest report announces the casting of Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle) and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt). Unfortunately, there aren't any character details to share just yet as they're being kept under wraps.
Deadline also shared a statement from the filmmaking team about the news: “Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning.”
It was previously revealed that Joey King, best known for The Kissing Booth movies, had been cast as Sally's daughter. Admittedly, I don't know that King and Kidman look all that similar, but they have played mother and daughter before in the Netflix movie A Family Affair. I'm wondering if Williams might be playing Bullock's daughter.
The 1998 film was adapted from Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel and followed Sally and Gillian learning about their magical abilities and contending with a familial curse. While it was poorly received by critics at the time, Practical Magic went on to become a beloved film to many and is often cited as one of the best autumnal movies ever made, the ideal cozy October watch.
Susanne Bier will direct the sequel. She previously worked with Bullock on Bird Box. Original co-writer Akiva Goldsman will return to pen the script with Succession's Georgia Pritchett. In addition to starring, Bullock and Kidman will also produce.
Practical Magic 2 will be released theatrically on September 18, 2026.
