It seems like we write an article about Game of Thrones star Hafþór Björnsson breaking world records every few months. While geeks might know him as Gregor Clegane, a.k.a. The Mountain, a.k.a. one of the most feared men in Westeros, in the real world, Björnsson is just as strong and intimidating. In fact, he's regarded as one of the strongest men on the planet, and he holds a world record to back it up.

Breaking world records has become a regular feat for the Icelandic strongman. It's basically a pastime hobby at this point. His first world record came in 2018, where he broke the Elephant bar world record; then he broke another weightlifting record in 2020; then, in July 2025, he set a deadlift record at the Eisenhart Black Competition. Now, this month, the 36-year-old shattered his own record at the 2025 World Deadlift Championship in Birmingham, England.

So what record has he set? Well, he managed to deadlift a ridiculously heavy 510kg (1,124lbs). To put that into an easily digestible perspective, 510kg is around the same weight as an adult polar bear, or a small car. This beats his previous Guinness World Record of 505kg, which he only set back in July. The achievement has been regarded as the single greatest performance in strength sports history.

After breaking his own record for the third time, Björnsson took to Instagram to share that it was "Crazy how easy it felt" to do it. "I honestly believe I could have deadlifted 530kg yesterday. What do you guys think?"

What's up next for Hafþór Björnsson?

Björnsson might be a showman on the strongman stage, but he's also a popular figure in Hollywood. He was cast as The Mountain for the fourth season of Game of Thrones, playing the character right through to his ultimate demise in season 8, where he and his brother, The Hound (Rory McCann), fell into a burning inferno during the Battle of King's Landing.

Outside of smashing his own world records, he continues to pursue acting gigs. Up next, he plays Goat Man in the upcoming live-action remake of Masters of the Universe from Travis Knight. The movie does not have a release date yet, but it's expected to premiere sometime in 2026.

In between all of his acting roles, we'll most likely report back with more articles about him smashing weightlifting records.
