It's Halloween season, and everyone is prepping their costumes. That includes ordinary people like you and I as well as celebrities with 14 million followers.

I may have someone in particular in mind: Sophie Turner, best known for playing the role of Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, just posted her outfit for Halloween 2024, and it harkens back to a style popular across the malls of America in the early 2000s, when Hot Topics were cultural hubs and cell phones actually had little buttons you had to compress like some kind of idiot. Turner's look this year is inspired by The Matrix:

Skintight black leather, long leather duster (click through to the end of the slideshow to see that), dark sunglasses, guns...she's pretty much a dead ringer for Neo (Keanu Reeves) or Trinity (Carrie Anne-Moss) from The Matrix movies. Everyone dressed like that in those films. If you're fighting robots in a simulated reality most of us think is the real world, it's important they not be able to see the whites of your eyes.

This is fun for me because, in my lifetime, I saw this style explode in popularity after The Matrix came out in 1999 and then regress to the point where a 20-something like Turner, who would have been a toddler when the first movie came out, wears this outfit as a tribute to a time gone by. The style has gone from zeitgeist to kitsch, following the life cycle of all pop culture. Also, kudos to Turner for keeping the sunglasses on throughout the night, even in low light environments; we love to see commitment.

Recently, Turner has been getting praise for her role as real-life diamond thief Joan Hannington in the show Joan, which aired on British TV earlier this year; it's currently airing on The CW in the United States. She's also said she'd "love" to play Sansa Stark again, given the right circumstances.

Happy Halloween week, everyone.
