Game of Thrones may have ended a long time ago, but its cast continues to keep fans entertained with exciting new projects. One of the show’s most beloved actresses is set to star in a brand-new Netflix series, and its release date has finally been revealed.
Most people know Emmy-nominated actress Lena Headey for her iconic role as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, but now she’s stepping into a whole new character that promises to showcase a different side of her talent. She takes on a lead role in Netflix's upcoming Western action drama titled The Abandons.
It's a show created by Kurt Sutter, who is best known for creating Sons of Anarchy and its spinoff Mayans M.C.. News of The Abandons first broke in October 2022, when Netflix revealed it had picked up the series for a 10-episode order, with each installment running an hour long. However, it wasn't until 2023 that the cast began to take shape.
The series takes place in the 1850s in the Washington Territory, where two very different families find their lives intertwined through crime, secrets, forbidden love, and a piece of land that holds hidden silver beneath its soil.
We provided the show's official logline via a Netflix press release below:
"Washington Territory - 1854 - The matriarchs of two very different families — one of wealth and privilege bound by blood, the other a found family of orphans and outcasts bound by love and necessity — find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love, and a piece of land with silver underneath. The collision echoes the American struggle of the haves and have-nots, in a place just beyond the reach of justice."
Headey joined the cast in March 2023, taking on the role of Fiona, a strong and devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, adopts four orphans to create her own family, guided by faith, fierce loyalty, and a determination to protect her loved ones at all costs.
Fiona is the head of one of the warring families in the Western drama. The other family is led by the Constance Van Ness character, played by Golden Globe Award-winning actress Gillian Anderson. Constance is different from Fiona in that she relies on wealth, social influence, and calculated ruthlessness to protect her family and expand her power. She prioritizes her family’s legacy and standing in society over emotional bonds.
The rest of the cast is made up of a bunch of other talented actors, such as Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Natalia del Riego, Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Toby Hemingway, Michael Greyeyes, Ryan Hurst, Katelyn Wells, Clayton Cardenas, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Brían F. O'Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Patton Oswalt, Michael Ornstein, Jonathan Koensgen, Jack Doolan, Michiel Huisman, Haig Sutherland, and Sarah White.
Are you ready to mark down the release date? The Abandons is slated to make its way to Netflix on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025. You can expect the Western drama to drop at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET on this date. That's when Netflix usually releases new content on its platform.
However, it's unclear whether all 10 episodes will be released at once or if they'll be released in batches. Our guess is that the complete first season will be available right away. Netflix would've likely specified in its press release that the episodes would be released in batches if that were the case, and it didn't.

An official trailer will likely be released closer to the show's release date. Netflix will probably drop it sometime in November, so be on the lookout for a first look at the drama!
