The 52nd Saturn Awards, which honor the best in all things sci-fi and fantasy, were held earlier this month. HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon won the award for Best Fantasy Series, beating out the likes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Percy Jackson and the Olympians and, weirdly, For All Mankind, which was nominated in the fantasy category despite being much closer to sci-fi. Meanwhile, Fallout won the award for Best Sci-Fi Show, although I think it's closer to fantasy than For All Mankind.
ANYWAY, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin took to his Not a Blog to give a belated congratulations to House of the Dragon for taking home the gold. "There was some tough competition, especially FOR ALL MANKIND, which is such a damn fine show, especially if you grew up during Mercury and Apollo, as I did," he wrote. He also consoled House of the Dragon cast members Emma D'Arcy and Matt Smith, who were both up for acting awards but who lost them to Rosario Dawson (for Ahsoka) and Antony Starr (The Boys) respectively. "It is an honor just to be nominated (as I’ve been told more times than I can count)," Martin wrote. "It’s true. Matt and Emma did not win (this year), but they did outstanding work bringing Rhaenyra and Daemon to vivid life."

Game of Thrones at the Saturn Awards
Martin also went further back in time to catalog some of the Saturn awards that Game of Thrones took home over the years, including:
- Best Limited Run Television Series (2015)
- Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series: Maisie Williams (2015)
- Best Fantasy Television Series (2019)
- Best Actress in a Television Series: Emilia Clarke (2019)
- Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series: Peter Dinklage (2019)
- Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series: Maisie Williams (2019)
Martin has rarely attended the Saturn Awards in person, and seemed baffled that this was the first time he'd found out about Game of Thrones winning all this hardware. "[Y]ou’d think someone would have told us. No one did," he wrote. "At least they did not tell me. Maybe all the trophies are lined up on a shelf at HBO somewhere, surrounded by all the other awards HBO has won over the decades. There have been a lot of them."
"In any case, belated congratulations to Maisie and Peter and Emilia, and the rest of our amazing team, to David and Dan and Bryan Cogman, to David Nutter and Alan Taylor and Miguel Sapochnik and all the other writers and directors who helped make GOT what it was… and to the cast and crew who worked beside them in 2015 and 2019. Take a (belated) bow."
I'm going to guess Game of Thrones was more focused on winning an aircraft carrier full of Emmys.
Anyway, House of the Dragon could win yet more awards — Saturns, Emmys, and what have you — when it returns for its third season sometime in 2026. Filming begins very soon:
