George R.R. Martin's reaction to Dexter Sol Ansell doing the 6-7 meme fuels hilarious fan response

Few authors command attention quite like George R.R. Martin, who is always finding himself back in the headlines. This week the mastermind behind the Game of Thrones franchise isn’t making headlines for The Winds of Winter or remarks he’s made about the franchise’s ongoing television slate. Instead, Martin has unexpectedly found himself back in the spotlight thanks to a viral moment involving the young star of the franchise’s newest original series. 

At a recent event, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star Dexter Sol Ansell was filmed doing the 6-7 meme while standing next to Martin in a video that is quickly going viral due in large part to Martin’s reaction. As Ansell performs the 6-7 meme hand gesture with over-the-top excitement, Martin looks on at the young actor with quite a puzzled expression painted on his face.

Martin's expression is certainly warranted, as the 6-7 craze is definitely just as hard to explain as it is to understand. Part of this is due to the fact that there really isn't a punchline or even a meaning to the 6-7 sensation. The literal definition of 6-7 by Merriam-Webster is a "nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens."

Naturally, it didn’t take long for the internet to run wild with the moment, leading to a wave of hilarious fan responses that prove once again no one is safe from becoming meme material.

Many fans were just as confused by the trend as Martin and are among the generations of individals ready to leave the 6-7 trend behind in the past.

Fans couldn't help themselves from making many jokes to how it was in that precise moment that Martin decided to kill Egg off in the franchise, or joking about Martin killing characters out of his series for less.

Others used the moment to point out how brilliant a job the casting team behind A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms did with casting Ansell as Egg. Ansell earned rave reviews for his performance in the first season, and fans pointed to the moment as yet another example of just how he's the best thing to happen to the franchise.

Of course, certain fans could not help themselves from using the moment to make some jokes about The Winds of Winter, a topic that is always at the heart of discussion when Martin is involved. Fans were quick to play off the 6-7 meme in regard to the status of Martin's long-in-the-works novel, cracking jokes about the book.

We definitely did not have Martin and Ansell going viral for a 6-7 meme on our 2026 bingo card, but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate the hilarity of the situation and the fun fans had reacting to the absurdity of the viral video!
