Harry Potter star Rupert Grint open to return as Ron, under two conditions

Rupert Grint isn't opposed to returning to the Harry Potter universe as his beloved character one day, but he's not seeking it out, either.

The Harry Potter franchise is a pop culture phenomenon. The movies are some of the most popular ever created. Everyone can't get enough of the Wizarding World, so much that HBO is developing its own Harry Potter TV series, starting from the ground up with an entirely new cast. HBO has set a 10-year commitment to faithfully adapting all seven novels by J.K. Rowling.

Naturally, everyone is curious as to whether any of the cast from the original Harry Potter movies are keen to get involved. Obviously, as many of them were child actors, it'd be untenable for them to reprise their original roles. A few cast members have indicated that they'd be interested in returning. For instance, Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) is on record of saying she's "open" to the prospect of making some sort of appearance.

HBO show aside, fans of the original movies have always pondered whether a revival is in the offing. I'm convinced that the decision makers at Hollywood have at least thought about it. After all, there is a popular play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that lets us catch up with the likes of Harry, Ron and Hermione as adults. If Hollywood ever gets around to adapting that, it could be the perfect opportunity to bring back the likes of Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the original movies.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning, Grint seemed tentatively open to hearing out potential stories, saying that he could be open to a return "if the timing was right and everyone was coming back," per Lad Bible. "I'm protective of him as well. It was my whole childhood. It was a character that was important to me, we kind of became the same person."

It would be awesome to see Grint appear in the HBO show, even in a cameo role. Fans would go crazy for it. Whether it happens, we'll have to wait and see.

HBO's Harry Potter series will enter production in 2025 under showrunner Francesca Gardiner. The series is still casting its main roles, which is a crazy big process. A reported 30,000+ children sent in audition tapes to play the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. But we're hearing more and more about actors going into talks for major roles, so expect to hear something concrete soon.
