Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first season of the HBO series, hasn't even premiered yet, but we've already had our first big cast exit for season 2, which will tell the story from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Gracie Cochrane, who will star as Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister, in the first season, will not be returning for season 2, according to a report from Deadline. Gracie's representatives released a statement confirming the actress would be exiting the series after season 1.
"Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one. Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds."

Ginny has a smaller role in the first story of J.K. Rowling's series. In the movies, Ginny was mostly reserved to the scenes at King's Cross station with the rest of her family.
HBO announced Cochrane's casting as Ginny in a larger news drop that revealed the rest of the Wesley kids, including Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George and Ruari Spooner as Percy. Alastair Stout had already been cast as Ron when the casting news broke.
Ginny had a brief appearance in the trailer for the Harry Potter series. You can see her in the part of the clip from King's Cross station and Platform 9 3/4 when Harry is boarding the Hogwarts Express.
Had she continued with the series, Cochrane was set for a much larger role in the second season of the series, though. Harry spends a lot more time with the Weasley family in the second season at the Burrow. Then, of course, Ginny, who is just a year younger than Ron, Harry Potter, and Hermione, attends Hogwarts, is placed in Gryffindor, and becomes a key player in the hunt to find out who has opened the Chamber of Secrets.
From there, Ginny becomes one of the most impactful characters in this story and Harry's life. I don't want to get into too many spoilers. Of the young actors in the series, Ginny is probably the fifth-most important character that this show needs to get right, simply based on how crucial the character becomes in the later books.
According to the Deadline report, casting will be underway to find the next Ginny Weasley. Production is still underway on the first season, which premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day (Dec. 25, 2026). The series has already been renewed for season 2, and production on the second season will start shortly after production on the first season wraps. It's been reported that filming starts on season 2 this fall.
HBO's aim is to keep the gaps between seasons as short as possible, but we all know that this series is going to be one that's stretched over the course of a decade, so fans should expect some larger breaks between seasons.
We'll share more news about the upcoming Harry Potter series as we find out! We'll likely have more casting and production news revealed in the near future.
