Harry Potter TV show release date isn't great for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2

HBO is releasing its new Harry Potter TV show sooner than expected, and it probably means a longer wait for Dunk and Egg's return.

The first season of HBO's new Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, drove a shot of adrenaline into the franchise and reignited the passion many viewers felt for Westeros. But even better than that one great season is the knowledge that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is slated to be an annual show, meaning we'll get more adventures with Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) every year for the forseeable future. This is the first time since Game of Thrones season 7 premiered almost a decade ago that we've had one-year gaps in a Westeros show, and man is it exciting.

However, Westeros is not HBO's only fantasy tentpole. Yesterday the studio premiered the first trailer for its new Harry Potter television show, which will re-adapt J.K. Rowling's book series. Do we need a remake of Harry Potter barely 15 years after the iconic movie series ended in 2011? Is it worth it for the creatively renowned HBO to take this kind of hit to their reputation by retreading a well-known story seemingly as a cash grab, and with a highly-problematic creator attached to boot?

Those are questions for another article, though you can probably guess my opinion. For now, we're concerned with how Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is going to effect the release date of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, because it seems likely a delay is about to hit Dunk and Egg's sophomore adventure.

How does Harry Potter's premiere date effect A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Before HBO's trailer drop, it was widely reported that the first season of Harry Potter was probably going to premiere sometime in 2027. It's a big ambitious production, and HBO is going all-in on bringing Rowling's world to life on the small screen. However, the studio surprised us with an earlier release date. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is due to premiere on Christmas 2026.

On the face of it, you might not think that makes much difference for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms; tonally these two shows are pretty far apart, with one aimed at kids and the other at adults. However, it's highly unlikely HBO will want to air two of its flagship fantasy series simultaneously.

As such, I'm no longer expecting A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 to premiere in mid-January like season 1 did. If Harry Potter runs for eight episodes in its first season, that means its finale will air on February 12. The chances A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 premieres earlier than that are slim.

When will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 premiere?

Considering the dates for Harry Potter's inaugural season, the absolute earliest I would expect A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 to premiere is February 14, which is the Sunday following the Harry Potter finale. But realistically, I think HBO could push it back even a little farther, since there won't be any season of the other Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon to balance against next year.

My personal guess is that we'll see A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiere in late March or early April, which would put it on track to assume the position on HBO's schedule once held by Game of Thrones during its heyday. This way Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone gets a bit more breathing room after its finale before Dunk and Egg swoop in to steal its thunder with their highly-anticipated second season.

For now I'd say to adjust expectations, because we're almost certainly going to have a slightly longer wait than one year exactly before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms returns.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is currently filming, and is scheduled to finish production sometime in June 2026. We'll be on the lookout for any new information about the show's release date, so check back for more.
