HBO debuts trailer for "lighter" Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to insiders
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones was the biggest hit in the history of HBO, not to mention the most talked-about show of the 2010s. The prequel show House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, has also been a ratings winner, and basically gives fans more of what they got the first time around: back-stabbing, battles, and deep dark character drama.
But HBO has another Game of Thrones prequel series on the way, and this one is different: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, about a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his precocious squire Egg. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set decades after House of the Dragon but decades before House of the Dragon. There are no dragons around, and at least in the novellas Martin has written so far (he has plans to write more, of course), Dunk and Egg don't get involved in any huge-scale wars. It's mostly them, traveling from place to place around Westeros, getting into trouble and having adventures.
“By design, we have taken a lighter tone,” HBO executive Casey Bloys recently told members of the press, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s very different from the previous two series.”
That's basically in line with what we've heard on the whisper network, and personally I'm all for a change in tone. What's more, HBO reportedly showed off a full trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at this press event, and folks like Jeff Conway gave impressions in line with what Bloys has said. "I got to watch a new trailer and it's super funny, yet still exciting action scenes look to be coming!" Conway wrote.
We've gotten to see a snippet of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms before — HBO has included it in a few of their "coming in 2025" bundled trailers — but we have yet to see a proper trailer. If HBO showed one off at this event, that day can't be far off!
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is due out on HBO and Max sometime in 2025. The third season of House of the Dragon will follow in 2026. And they're working on more beyond that:
