If you’re like me and you’ve waited a couple of years to see if Hogwarts: Legacy would become a serious franchise or not, then we have the answer you’re waiting for!

According to the Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter for the second quarter, the company officially confirmed that Hogwarts: Legacy 2 is in development. It was confirmed ages ago that there would be more Harry Potter-styled games, but a continuation of the hit video game was up in the air. Now, we know for sure it’s happening.

When Hogwarts: Legacy was first released in 2023, the game received great reviews and sold 12 million copies in its first two weeks. That number kept growing and growing.

At the same time, the game was met with some backlash, considering Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s public views on the transgender community. There was a boycott that encouraged fans not to buy it. Though the developer had told fans back in 2020 that the author had no involvement in the creation of the game, parts of the fandom still felt strongly against supporting it.

Harry Potter’s resurgence in popularity

But even if the new game is now confirmed, there is still no set release date whatsoever, which isn’t that shocking. It took years for the first game to be released, and while it is in active development now, I can only imagine how long it will be until we get even a teaser for a sequel game.

The announcement of this new game comes at a time when Harry Potter as a whole has received a bit of a renaissance. The last film was released 15 years ago, but there have been several instances that show this franchise isn’t going anywhere any time soon. The biggest signal is the Harry Potter television show that’s happening over at HBO, which is said to be a more faithful adaptation of the novels.

With eight episodes, it will be interesting to see what they include in this compared to the movies. Hopefully, it’s a lot more.

HBO’s adaptation, however, is not the only thing happening in the Wizarding World. Tom Felton has extended his time on the Broadway show, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, one final time, because fans love to see him in the role. A new Harry Potter land opened up at Universal’s Epic Universe theme park in Florida. A new Harry Potter shop will be opening up on Oxford Street in the United Kingdom, becoming the biggest one across the pond. It’s clear fans are still craving more from the story of the Boy Who Lived.

Whether Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be as successful as the first game remains to be seen. But if this slew of Harry Potter-themed content is anything to go by, I think it’s going to be a few Potter-filled years for all of us.
