The legendary horror director has been on a roll as of late, receiving the kind of acclaim he has long-deserved. His latest outing saw him soaking it up at the premiere of a new entry in one of his favorite series: Godzilla.

Some filmmakers are instantly beloved by their contemporary peers and audiences. Their work is popular, earns critical acclaim, and comes to shape the zeitgeist in self-evident ways. Other filmmakers however, even if they have a few big hits interspersed with other works, can see their work misunderstood by audiences of the time. Such was consistently the case for writer-director-musician John Carpenter, who spent the better part of three decades making science fiction, action, and horror films that were ahead of the curve.

While films like his original 1978 Halloween were praised and became huge commercial hits, other films like The Thing, Prince of Darkness, They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, Escape from L.A., and The Ward were drastically underappreciated upon release and have only come to begin to be properly re-evaluated in more recent years. Just a few weeks ago, the filmmaker received his first Academy Award recognition in decades with an award from the Academy Museum Gala. Now, the infamously reclusive director has made another high-profile public appearance at the L.A. premiere for one of his most anticipated films of the year: Godzilla Minus Zero.

Carpenter has long been a steadfast Godzilla fan. Growing up in the ‘50s, the filmmaker was influenced strongly by the science fiction horror films of the time, especially things like Howard Hawks and Chrs Nyby’s The Thing From Another World or Jack Arnold’s It Came From Outer Space. But beyond that, Carpenter also revealed that he was profoundly impacted by the original Ishirō Honda-helmed Godzilla film.

“It was not a summer popcorn fest, but a horror movie," Carpenter said of the film during an interview in 2022. You might know me as a horror movie director, but right now, what I’d really like to be known as is a giant Godzilla fan.”

Carpenter’s love of Godzilla extended to Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One when it released in 2023. Carpenter publicly championed the film on multiple occasions, issuing a statement on social media when the film won its own Academy Award: “Incredible! Godzilla Minus One wins an Academy Award for special effects. In my lifetime. Fantastic!”

Seeing the kinds of thematically-heavy genre films that Carpenter was inspired by in his youth and ultimately went on to make in his adulthood finally getting the kind of glowing reception they deserve clearly warmed the director’s heart, and such public outpourings of support apparently endeared him to Yamazaki as well. The director made sure to invite Carpenter to his local premiere of his new film, Godzilla Minus Zero, where Carpenter seemed overjoyed and prepared to have the time of his life watching a new Godzilla movie. Awesome stuff.
