House of the Dragon builds big new set for season 3, and we think we know what it is

Filming on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series is getting off the ground. What can we glean from the sets?

Filming on the third season of House of the Dragon has either started or is about to start any minute. The crew is working feverishly to build sets; the other day, we saw a set for a huge ship, which will almost definitely be used to in the upcoming Battle of the Gullet. But that's not the only major event from George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood we'll see adapted in the next season of this Game of Thrones prequel series.

New photos of yet another set hint at more exciting developments to come. Check out these pictures from @UnBoxPHD:

A new town set is going up. What are we looking at?

Beware House of the Dragon SPOILERS below

Some commenters think we could be looking at the towns of Hull or Spicetown, both towns on the island of Driftmark. Driftmark will play a key role in the upcoming Battle of the Gullet, where navies led by Sharako Lohar and Corlys Velaryon will meet at sea. That one will come early in the season.

But I don't think that's what we're looking at here. I think this is Tumbleton, a town in the Reach. We already heard it mentioned in the second season: when things were getting harried in King's Landing, Kat (Ellora Torchia) suggested to her husband Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) that they flee for the town Tumbleton. Instead, Hugh decided to answer Rhaenyra Targaryen's call for new dragonriders and now rides the dragon Vermithor.

Without spoiling things too much, Hugh will indeed go to Tumbleton later in the story. Kat is not a character in Fire & Blood, but I'm guessing the writers on House of the Dragon will work her into his story on the show. Once there, we'll get another battle, although I'll leave the particulars to you to figure out.

I can see the clash at Tumbleton coming late in season 3; it could even serve as the climax to the season. We'll keep an eye out as filming gets underway. New episodes will roll out on HBO and Max sometime in 2026.
