After a two-year wait in between seasons, House of the Dragon has finally returned on HBO with its highly anticipated third season. In the lead up the the season 3 premiere, fans have been counting down the days until we at long last get to witness the Battle of the Gullet and other moments we have been looking forward to since the series began.
House of the Dragon season 3 begins with the iconic battle, a bloody and chaotic fight taking place in the sea. We're left with one of the show's most shocking deaths and another major life left on the line, and while that's for sure one of the most unforgettable sequences in the entire premiere episode, there's another memorable moment that will surely earn some conversation.
About halfway into House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1, the series implements one of the more jarring and unexpected aspects of its fellow franchise prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Yes, the Game of Thrones franchise once again features an infamous poop scene, and while this one isn't nearly as graphic, it's sure to leave an impression.

House of the Dragon calls back to the polarizing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms poop scene
During House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1, Ulf White (Tom Bennett) is shown pooping while hiding out near Harrenhal. He and the other dragonseeds, Addam of Hull and Hugh Hammer, were recruited by Rhaenyra to claim dragons last season, and now they were sent to wait for Aemond and Vhagar to make an appearance after leaving King's Landing.
As smallfolk, Ulf White and the two others aren't used to being called upon for missions quite like this, which leaves them bored and uncomfortable while waiting for Aemond, one of the most powerful Targaryens. While still part of this stakeout mission, Ulf is shown popping, and even though we don't see the excrement like in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we do hear what's happening.
In the midst of going to the bathroom, Ulf gets scared by a goat, which contributes to at least part of the sounds we hear. The scene might be different from that in the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, since we actually see the extent of Dunk's bodily function, but it's still continuing what has now become a gross trend that the previous spinoff series started.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker explained his intention behind Dunk's pooping scene wasn't to polarize the audience and stood by the inclusion of some of the show's more gross-out humor that fans might have expected. Parker said, "At the end of the day, what's funnier than a fart? If you can't laugh at that, I don't know, I sort of feel bad for you."
Parker's spinoff series separated itself from the rest of the Game of Thrones franchise, as the series for the most part featured a much lighter tone and included some intentional comedy, including the aforementioned pooping scene, the farts, and other low-hanging fruit humor. But House of the Dragon hasn't been particularly known for employing that kind of gross-out amusement.
Thankfully, this paricularly pooping scene really doesn't make or break House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1 and shouldn't take away from the viewing experience for fans. But we can still hope that these kinds of things don't become a normal part of the series moving forward, since we're here for battles not bowel movements. Maybe if Ulf had more fiber, he wouldn't have been in that position.
