While we wait for her to return in House of the Dragon season 3, Olivia Cooke takes on a new Amazon Prime Video series that once more puts her in the middle of a complex family!
Of course, we can expect actors of the Game of Thrones spinoff to take on new roles in between seasons. That includes Cooke, already a TV veteran with roles in Bates Motel and Slow Horses. Those pasts came before she debuted as Alicent Hightower on House of the Dragon, a key part of the saga.
While filming for season 3 is underway, Cooke is keeping busy, as she’s starring in the new Prime Video thriller series The Girlfriend. And House of the Dragon fans may find a few parallels between Cooke’s roles as a woman thrust into a dangerous family feud.

The trailer opens like a classic rom-com as we meet Laura (Robin Wright), a rich woman with a great husband, Howard (Waleed Zuaiter), and son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). This is thrown off when Daniel brings home a new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), and Laura starts to sense something off about her.
The full synopsis for The Girlfriend reads:
"Based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, The Girlfriend follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective. Viewers will find some unreliable narration throughout the six-episode thriller."

The trailer hints at the twists of the six-episode series as it plays in two possible ways. On the one hand, it looks like Laura is right in suspecting Cherry as at least a con artist and at worst a killer with her mysteries. However, there are also hints of Cherry discovering some dark secrets about this family and that Laura may have her own sinister motives.
There's also steamy action, something Cooke knows all about. Plus, perhaps Daniel has his own dark side as the series once more plays on how each woman has their own view of what's happening.
There are knives thrown, someone drowning, and a lot of screaming in the trailer—and Cooke and Wright look to be matched up well. The series seems to play on how neither woman can fully be trusted, only adding to the mystery. The Girlfriend looks to be a fun show to check out for fans of Cooke.
The Girlfriend premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 10 on Prime Video.
