It seems like House of the Dragon season 3 only just began, and yet we’re officially halfway through the season. Episode 4 put us one step closer to the end of the third season, and it was quite an eventful episode, making major moves with Ormund’s true threat becoming clear and bringing about an unexpected betrayal from Daemon, which will absolutely come back to bite him eventually.
The episode did a fantastic job of setting up the back half of the season, and, judging by the midseason trailer released by HBO, the war ahead is about to get messy and lives will be lost along the way.
HBO’s House of the Dragon season 3 midseason trailer does not hold back in teasing that war is coming, and it’s clear that not everyone will survive the battles ahead. We’re certainly worried about the lives of several characters, including Criston Cole, who is conspicuously front and center in many of the battle shots after being given limited screen time all season.
While the footage suggests devastating losses are on the horizon, there’s one unexpected sigh of relief it offers to fans. New footage from the promo provides clarification on Aemond’s fate, putting to rest fears that he had already fallen.
House of the Dragon midseason trailer confirms Aemond did not die
Any doubts about Aemond’s fate have officially been put to rest thanks to a pair of new scenes featured within the House of the Dragon season 3 midseason trailer. Aemond might have been knocked down, but fans have not seen the last of him, and it looks like we’ll finally get to see him back in action as early as episode 5.
In the second episode of the season, Aemond made his way to Harrenhal, where he brutally killed Ser Simon Strong and his grandsons. During his attack, Aemond is stabbed and collapses to the ground as Alys Rivers enters the room, and he begs for her help. We never find out whether Alys actually tends to his wounds, and Aemond’s fate has been left up in the air in the last two episodes with the character out of sight and out of mind in episodes 3 and 4.
While we know that Aemond does not die in the book at Harrenhal after being stabbed, House of the Dragon has been known to stray from the source material. As such, fans were justified in having some fear about his fate—even if we never really expected the show would kill him off in such an underwhelming manner and stray away from the source material, knowing that doing so would impact several forthcoming storylines.
After sidelining the character for a fourth of the season, Aemond will be back in action, though it’s clear he’s still recovering from his injuries.
The first shot of Aemond in the trailer shows him practicing his swordsmanship shirtless, a bandage wrapped around his chest. Later, we see Aemond on his knees looking up at Alys, hinting that we’re about to see the show finally adapt the Aemond and Alys' romance and give the pair a proper storyline in the episodes ahead.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the writers approach the relationship, but we’re certainly excited to see how the pair’s relationship is written and even more excited to see Aemond back on our screens!
