House of the Dragon season 3 returns to Wales to film in familiar locations

Get ready to return to Harrenhal, or the Vale, or both.
House of the Dragon season 2
House of the Dragon season 2 | House of the Dragon

Production on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is well underway. We've heard a lot about some of the huge battle sequences the show is preparing, particularly the water-bound Battle of the Gullet. But of course, there's plenty more story to tell beyond that.

House the Dragons, an account on X that follows the production of the show, is reporting that the cast and crew will be filming scenes for season 3 in Dinorwic Quarry in Wales. The cameras will roll on June 10, 11, 12, 13 and 26. Preparations are underway now, with trucks moving into the area:

According to House the Dragons, scenes will involve "extras in armour, horses, special effects and various props." So it's a House of the Dragon scene, then? That may not tell us much, but we know that, in prior seasons, Dinorwic Quarry has been used to stand in for the crumbling castle of Harrenhal, where Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) spent much of season 2 in a dream-addled stupor; and the Vale of Arryn, where Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) traveled so she and Rhaenyra Targaryen's young son Joffrey would be away from the worst of the war. At the end of season 2, Rhaena stumbled upon a dragon living in the Vale, a plot alteration that little pleases author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the book on which House of the Dragon is based. Still, that's the direction the show is going in, and we'll definitely follow up on Rhaena's journey in season 3.

If the show sticks to the text of Martin's book Fire & Blood, Daemon will leave Harrenhal pretty soon, but there's still plenty more to happen at the ruined castle; remember, at the end of season 2, Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) was marching on the place and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) was looking to join him. Basically, I expect Dinorwic Quarry to once again stand in for both Harrenhal and the Vale, and maybe some other places we don't know about yet.

And we won't know for awhile. The third season of House of the Dragon has been filming for several weeks now, but there's still miles to go; we won't see new episodes on HBO and Max until sometime in 2026. However, HBO will be airing a brand-new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sometimes later this year, although we don't have an exact release date as of yet.
