House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal just revealed a very important piece of information about the hit HBO series, and it's cleared things up for some confused fans.
During an appearance on the Escape Hatch podcast, which was posted at the end of December 2025, Condal revealed that House of the Dragon season 4 will be the final season of the Game of Thrones prequel.
Condal was asked how he was doing, and after sharing updates on season 3, he revealed the news fans have been waiting for about season 4.
"It's good. It's definitely, like, turned a big page here," Condal said. "And now, also knowing there's only, you know, one more left to go and feeling like we can leave it all out on the field, you know, because we've started the writing process for season 4, which will be the last one. So, yeah, it's all trending up in a good way.”

Going back a few years, fans have known that House of the Dragon season 4 would likely be the final season. Condal's commented on the series' trajectory and end before. Then, some comments by Casey Bloys last year suggested we could see a fifth season to end House of the Dragon.
The confusion started when HBO officially renewed House of the Dragon for season 4 at the end of 2025. At that time, Bloys, the CEO of HBO, did not commit to House of the Dragon season 4 being the final season. Instead, he said they were basically leaving the decision up to Condal, which seems to be a typical business operation for HBO.
Here’s what Bloys told Deadline after the renewal:
"For all of our shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So, I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.”
It appears that, if Condal is to be believed, and I'm sure that he is, House of the Dragon will come to an end in season 4. That's still a long time away, though.
House of the Dragon season 3 is currently in post-production

The Game of Thrones prequel is currently in post-production on its third season. Production officially wrapped in October 2025. Then, it moved into post-production where Condal confirmed in the podcast that they're hard at work making "these goddamn dragons."
House of the Dragon season 3 will arrive sometime in the summer of 2026, but we don't know when exactly to expect the season will be ready to be released.
From there, we’d expect pre-production to finish on season 4 sometime this year, which will pave the way for production on the fourth and now-confirmed final season sometime in the future. Unfortunately, we don’t know any production details yet, but I’m sure those will be ironed out in no time.
Stay tuned for more news about House of the Dragon season 3 and season 4.
