Goodbyes are becoming more common on House of the Dragon, and there are certainly a few more to be had by the time season 3 draws to an end. Every episode of the show’s third season has featured at least a few deaths, some more notable than others, and the penultimate episode of the season was no different.
Episode 7 saw Alicent and Ser Adrian Redfort riding to Harrenhal to enact Rhaenyra’s plan for Alicent to get Aemond to let his guard down in order to kill him once and for all. Upon arriving at Harrenhal, Alicent sells Aemond on a story about barely managing to escape King’s Landing after Rhaenyra took control and credits Ser Adrian for helping to get her to safety in the chaos. When she introduces Aemond to Ser Adrian, Aemond at first seems grateful for his help, telling him he owes him a debt, to which Ser Adrian remarked that he did only as his conscience demanded.
Aemond extends his hand to thank Ser Adrian, but much to Alicent’s surprise, Aemond repays the favor by killing Ser Adrian by stabbing him with a dagger through the neck. As he then explains, there are secrets at Harrenhal he must protect, and he can trust no stranger. Of course, it was the right move for Aemond even if he didn’t know it at the time, as the plan was clearly for Ser Adrian to aid Alicent in the murder of her son, and Ser Adrian joins a growing list of characters to meet their demise at Aemond’s hand in the show.
Following Ser Adrian’s untimely demise, actor Barry Sloane has joined the many before him in taking a pause to reflect on his journey and bid House of the Dragon fans a proper goodbye.
“In the career of a working actor, many different things are asked and expected of you. Sometimes you are employed to play beautiful songs on the piano, and other times you are asked to carry it whilst other artists play beautiful songs. It was my true pleasure to support such top-level talent on House of the Dragon. To all the fans of the show, I can confirm that it is absolutely as much fun inhabiting the world as you imagine it would be,” Sloane wrote on Instagram in a tribute to his character, which was accompanied by a series of behind-the-scenes shots.
Among the photos shared by Sloane was a pair of photos with Ewan Mitchell, including one from the set, with Sloane giving a fun wink to the actor behind the character responsible for his downfall in his goodbye message.
“Ewan is brilliant. Glad we got to dance a little before Redfort’s unfortunate accident. Seemed fitting. See, we’re friends really,” Sloane joked.
He also took the opportunity to give some well-deserved flowers to Emma D’Arcy for their outstanding performance as Rhaenyra after getting the chance to witness their work through the season.
“I spent a lot of my time on the show watching Emma work and I must say, they are up there with the very best actors I have been fortunate enough to work with. And such a wonderful human too! BRING….The Emmy….TO THEM!”
We certainly agree with Sloane that D'Arcy deserves to take home an Emmy for their work in House of the Dragon season 3, which has been incredible to witness throughout the season. While there are many performances in the season that are Emmy-worthy, there is no denying that D'Arcy is most deserving of television's highest honor, and we can only hope that the Emmy voters share Sloane's sentiment when it comes time to vote for the 79th Annual Emmys in 2027!
