Not many people knew who Emma D'Arcy was before House of the Dragon, but their performance as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen has made everyone pay attention. That includes Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who's one of only a few people to have won the Academy Award for Best Director twice in a row, for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) in 2015 and for The Revenant in 2016. We don't know the title of his new movie, but we know it will feature Emma D'Arcy as well as Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars alive, so working alongside him is definitely a feather in D'Arcy's cap. It's ridiculous to say that this is a case of hometown hero makes good, because D'Arcy is very talented and House of the Dragon is a huge show, but it may feel a bit like that for D'Arcy's fans, who have eagerly embraced the actor since they blew up. “I’m delighted to be working with such extraordinary and exacting artists as Alejandro and Tom,” D'Arcy told Deadline. “They are the masters of their craft, and witnessing them in combination has been a privilege.”
Whatever the movie ends up being called, it's about “the most powerful man in the world [who] embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” It kinda sounds like an Elon Musk biopic. I assume Tom Cruise will play the world's most powerful man. As for D'Arcy, who knows? Maybe they're the disaster threatening to destroy everything.
The cast of this mystery movie also includes John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Michael Stuhlbarg. There's no release date as of yet, but Tom Cruise has said he's having "the time of my life" working with Iñárritu and "this cast." He kind of always seems like he's having the time of his life, doesn't he?
You'll be able to see Cruise pretty soon when Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hits theaters on May 23. As for D'Arcy, they're filming the third season of House of the Dragon as we speak. New episodes are due out on HBO and Max sometime in 2026.
