House of the Dragon has already had its fair share of epic battles. From the War in the Stepstones in season 1, to the Battle of Rook's Nest in season 2, the show keeps dialling up the epicness. As we look ahead to season 3, it will feature the Battle of the Gullet, which is regarded as one of the bloodiest sea battles in Westeros’ history.
The recently released trailer for House of the Dragon season 3 gave us a glimpse of what's in store for the Battle of the Gullet; it's a big-scale, bloody, and chaotic naval skirmish between the Blacks (those loyal to Rhaenyra Targaryen, commanded by Lord Corlys Velaryon) and the Greens (those loyal to Aegon II). Of course, there's plenty of dragons involved, too. The battle was pretty devastating on both sides, with each suffering heavy losses. Don't worry, we won't spoil the outcome of it here. But you can catch a glimpse of the action in the trailer below:
Abubakar Salim (Alyn of Hull) recalls the "blood, sweat, and tears" that went into filming the Battle of the Gullet.
For star Abubakar Salim, who joined the cast as Alyn of Hull in season 2, the battle sequence was simply unforgettable. Alyn will be right in the forefront of the battle; he sails with Lord Corlys Velaryon on the Sea Snake. Of course, in the season 2 finale, we saw Alyn begin preparing for the Velaryon fleet to sail towards the Gullet.
When the trailer for season 3 was released, showcasting a little of the Battle of the Gullet, Salim took to X to rhapsodize about his experience working on a project of such scale. "Filming this sequence has to be one of the craziest highlights of my career to date," he wrote. "Words cannot describe the literal blood, sweat and tears that went into conjuring this spectacle. I cannot wait for audiences to see this. We truly hope we did you all proud."
Filming the battle comes with all sorts of unique challenges. Out of all the possible hurdles, Salim found one thing particularly tough: accidentally ingesting dirty water. "Also the amount of dutty ass water I drank while swinging that sword was probably the funniest stuff captured on camera."
