If you're a House of the Dragon fan, then the wait for season 3 has been especially brutal, but all of the details and set leaks that have come out have only made the anticipation higher. Production has been ongoing for most of the year on the upcoming new season of the hit Game of Thrones prequel spinoff series, but it sounds like cameras will stop rolling very, very soon.
House of the Dragon star Matt Smith dropped by the Today show on Aug. 25 to promote his new movie Caught Stealing and answered some questions about House of the Dragon season 3 from Today co-anchor Craig Melvin. When asked about filming the new season, Smith revealed the shoot is getting "hectic" and that they're "nearing the end." That's the most exciting news yet!
"We are in the middle of it. We're in month six of eight, and so, we're about to get to the real meat of, you know, the end of the series, really," Smith said. "It's getting hectic, it's getting busy. There's a lot going on there. It's tough, but we're nearing the end. We've got 35 shoot days left."
Sounds like they are far more than in the "middle of it," more like in the thick of it! It's no wonder that production has been particularly hectic, beyond simply taking up the majority of 2025 for most of the cast. In the midst of nearing completion on season 3, Smith has also had to work in his commitments for the promotion of Caught Stealing, and he's just one of the show's busy cast members.
While the number Smith provided makes it seem like House of the Dragon season 3 will wrap filming in 35 days, it's worth noting that he specified with shooting days. The season most likely won't wrap completely in the next month, since 35 days would bring us to about the end of September. There will be days that production doesn't take place, meaning filming will spill into October and then wrap.
Smith teased that the production schedule has been getting more and more "busy" as the cast and crew race toward the finish line on the highly anticipated third season. Even though some of the big battles have already been shot, there are likely still some major moments left to go before filming reaches completion. Unfortunately, Smith didn't give away any specific plot teases.
Some fans might notice that Smith said "the end of the series," though he likely meant "series" in the way it's referred to in the UK, what we call "seasons" in the US. Don't worry, the show isn't ending with season 3. It's already been confirmed to end with season 4. Although House of the Dragon likely doesn't film episodes in sequence, Smith seems to suggest that they will soon be filming the season finale.
