House of the Dragon season 3 might be coming to an end, but one breakout star from the hit HBO series will be returning to the small screen sooner than anticipated, and she’ll be making a bit of history in the process!
BBC One has announced that House of the Dragon star Bethany Antonia will be taking to the ballroom this fall to compete as part of the celebrity cast for season 24.
"I can’t quite believe that I will be heading to the Strictly ballroom this September! I have grown up watching Strictly, and I am so excited to take the challenge on and (hopefully!) learn a new skill. See you on the dance floor," Antonia exclaimed after she was announced as the ninth contestant for the upcoming season.
By joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing season 24, Antonia will be making history by becoming the first star from a Game of Thrones franchise series to compete on the long-running celebrity dance competition series!
History was intended to be made in season 23 when Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn was announced to compete on the show. Sadly, Nairn was forced to drop out of the competition before the season began due to medical reasons that prevented him from taking to the ballroom.
“With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this season of Strictly Come Dancing due to unexpected medical reasons. I was truly looking forward to the journey, and I’m deeply sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to seeing me on the dance floor. Thank you all for your support, and I will be back on my feet very soon, in every sense. Love to all, Kristian,” Nairn said in a statement at the time announcing his departure from the show.
While we sadly did not get to see Nairn appear on the show and become the first Game of Thrones star to compete on the long-running UK staple, that disappointment is lessened now knowing we’ll get to see Antonia compete this fall! In fact, it honestly seems only fitting that it's a Targaryen whose name will go down in the history books as the first member of the Game of Thrones franchise to compete on Strictly.
We’ve loved seeing Antonia shine in the role of Lady Baela Targaryen on House of the Dragon, but we’re thrilled to see a different side of her as she takes to the ballroom to tackle a new challenge. There is no doubt that she’ll enter the season with a leg up on the competition, as Game of Thrones fans are among the most passionate fans in the world, and there is no doubt they’ll show up to support Antonia on her journey this fall on Strictly Come Dancing.
She’ll certainly need that fan support as BBC One is putting together quite an impressive cast for the upcoming season of Strictly. In addition to Antonia, season 24 will also include EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, TV personality Dani Dyer, singer-songwriter Delta Goodrem, celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton, Love Island champion Cach Mercer, TV and radio host Will Best, Paralympic gold medalist Dame Sarah Storey, actress Jaime Winstone, and Chelsea football pro Shaun Wright-Phillips.
An official premiere date for Strictly Come Dancing season 24 has not yet been announced, but the new season is expected to kick off this September!
