In 2022, director Matt Reeves rebooted the Batman story once again with The Batman, which introduced Robert Pattinson as the latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader. The movie was a success, as any half-decent movie about Batman is bound to be. And the TV spinoff show, The Penguin, might be even better!
The Penguin is set after the events of The Batman; it's a sequel, not a prequel or a story that takes place at the same time as The Batman. You'll recall that, in The Batman, Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) is a low-level enforcer in the mob. The Penguin is the story of how he climbs the ladder after the death of prominent mob boss Carmine Falcone, who died during the events of The Batman.
But exactly how long after The Batman does The Penguin take place? It ends up we know exactly: about a week.
The Batman begins on Halloween, October 31, when the Riddler (Paul Dano) kills his first victim. The film's climax takes place on November 5, when the Riddler blows up Gotham City's seawall, flooding the city. The next morning, November 6, Batman helps the survivors.
About a week after that, we pick up with Oswald Cobb in The Penguin, where he shoots Carmine Falcone's son Alberto to death in the opening scene. At Alberto's funeral, his death is listed as having happened on November 13.
So all of this is happening in a pretty compressed time frame. The Penguin still has a few episodes to go before it wraps up its first (and possibly only) season, but Matt Reeves has said that the show will serve as an "entry point" into The Batman: Part II, which is due out in 2026. So Although these movies and shows are being released a while apart from each other, the events happen close in time.
New episodes of The Penguin drop Sunday nights on HBO.
