Wicked, the Universal musical based on the book by Gregory Maguire, was unquestionably one of the biggest hits of 2024. The book was already popular from back in the day and the Broadway musical moreso. It only made sense that the movie musical would do well, earning almost $750 million at the box office.
The first movie covered only the first half of the musical. The follow-up movie, Wicked: For Good, will close out the story. Per The Hollywood Reporter, theater owners recently got to see a trailer for the new film in the Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where studios are showing off their upcoming projects. No footage from the trailer has leaked, but a bunch of information has:
- The trailer features Dorothy, the heroine of The Wizard of Oz. We don't see her face in the trailer, but she's there, walking along the yellow brick road.
- The first movie ended with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) choosing to defy the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), putting her on the path to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. Meanwhile, her friend Glinda (Ariana Grande) stayed with the Wizard, securing herself a position of power like she'd always wanted. The two are now on opposite sides of a conflict, but their friendship endures. “Elphaba, they’re coming for you,” Glinda warns her friend at one point.
- We glimpse the wedding between Glinda and Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), who may still be carrying a torch for Elphaba.
- Lots and lots of flying monkeys.
Universal could release the new trailer at any moment. While we wait, some images from the second movie found their way into previous trailers, so we have some idea of what to look out for:

The first poster for the movie has also emerged. Check it out below:

The poster for the second movie reminds me of the one for the first movie, where Glinda and Elphaba are reaching out to each other but can't quite make contact. The gulf between them has widened in Wicked: For Good. Also, note that the lines of the Wizard's castle in the background and the crags that Elphaba and Glinda are standing on in the For Good poster form a "W," for Wicked. That's attention to detail.

Wicked: For Good will come out in theaters on November 21, 2025, almost exactly a year after the first movie.
