Interview With The Vampire is the best show no one is watching. You may get tired of hearing that, but it's true. AMC's juicy adaptation of Anne Rice's classic horror novel has been killing it for two straight seasons, and I can't wait to see what they do with the third, which will start adapting Rice's other books like The Vampire Lestat. Showrunner Rolin Jones wants to make that season "a little pop masterpiece" full of original rock music, which sounds exactly crazy enough to work.
We're still a ways off from a release date, but the excellent second season of Interview With The Vampire is currently making the rounds at award shows like the Critics Choice Awards, where it lost in the Best Drama Series category to Shōgun just this past weekend. Stars Sam Reid (Lestat) and Delainey Hayles (Claudia) were on hand to field questions about the show's passionate fanbase; Interview With The Vampire is definitely one of those series that may not have a ton of people watching, but those who are absolutely love it.
"I feel really happy that the show's getting some recognition," Sam Reid told Gold Derby. "We're kind of a small, kind of culty show, and the critics have been incredibly supportive of us. And if this helps other people watch the show and see everyone else's extraordinary work, that's awesome. I'm grateful."
"It's so cool to be in something that people feel strongly about. That's hard to do, I think, when you're making shows...And to be in something that they care about, that's all you can ask for."
It is indeed hard for a TV show to hit that magic center square where it's both A) Intensely loved, and B) widely popular. Game of Thrones scratched that elusive itch for a straight decade on HBO, which is why it's still talked about. Somehow I doubt that a third season that's also a glam rock opera will bring in a ton of new viewers, but I know I'll be watching.
Sam Reid wants Interview With The Vampire to cross over with Severance
As long as they were on the red carpet, Gold Derby also asked Reid and Hayles what show they'd like to see Interview With The Vampire cross over with. Reid picked another cult genre hit: "Severance. Wouldn't it be amazing? It would be so good."
So Lestat and Claudia and company would have their personalities severed and work in an office as naive drones? Sure, why not? Hayles chose something a little more straightforward: the HBO trading drama Industry: "Stock markets, vampires, I dunno, it could blend."
Interview With The Vampire season 3 will hopefully be along late this year, although I wouldn't be surprised is we had to wait until 2026.
